I need a suggestion for a good code scanner please. I would like a really good one, I have read there are several types and some give more advanced information than others. Please include a little linky love with your suggestion so I can check it out. I hate having to run to the stealership to get the codes checked on my vehicles.
I may as well throw this option out there, if you want performance boost as well as code readability http://marylandspeed.com/diablosport...191-p-567.html I've had predators now for 4 of my cars and love them. Tells the code and what it is when reading codes. You can log data as well. To me it seems worth much more than just buying a scanner.
Most inexpensive code readers will only read the EPA emissions codes and won't read from modules such as the body control module, trans module, door module, air bag module, etc. Almost all will reset codes but won't let you make changes to the on board computers.
If you want an OBDII tool that will read all trouble codes you have to spend a lot of money.
I have this one that I paid about $150 for and connects to my notebook computer. It has a few bells and whistles in additon to a reader/reset tool. the same tool can also be used with the free software from scantool.net
I have an Auto X-Ray 6000. It's a little more money, but it's online upgradable and has a larger screen to show running parameter's while driving, and even record's. These aren't to bad on the used market. Also have a Predator programmer, but never tried the scan function. Also, most auto part's stores will let you use a tool to perform a scan in their parking lot. As "08vycpe" mentioned, if you really want to dig deep, it's pretty much dealer time for the expensive high tech tool's.
Try this one http://autoenginuity.com/ . It can be loaded onto a PC or a Palm. With the right options it will scan the codes the cheap scanners will not scan and is also capable of issuing commands to the on board diagnostic modules similar to what a GM Tech 2 can do.
