Default Curious about a couple issues

My gas cap broke today on my '07 C6, with barely 15K miles. I took it off to refuel and when I tried to put it back on it would just spin and spin and I could just lift it off without turning it counter clockwise.

I bought a new gas cap from the Chevrolet dealer and the parts guy told me this is fairly common on Chevrolet (and, I suppose, all GM cars and trucks that use this particular type gas cap). he has gone through a couple of them himself.

Not a big deal, but if this is a chronic problem why doesn't GM issue a recall? Seems to me this would be an emissions matter.

Anyone else have this happen?

Secondly, a few times lately I have sat down in the car, ready to start it and the DIC gives me a message "No Fob Detected" when I press the starter switch. If I dig around in my pocket and take out the fob, everything is fine. Today it happened when I tried to turn the engine off. I'm too lazy to go check the owner's manual, but I suspect one of two things;

The battery in the key fob needs to be replaced (3 years old) or,

If the fob is in the same pocket as the keys and fob to my other car (Mazda 3 with keyless entry) they are somehow interfering with one another. The problem has only recently surfaced and I'm sure I've had both fobs in my pocket many times before.

What do you think?

fobs are finicky.. mine gets buried in my pocket under the seat belt with me knowing it and i have to push it down some..LOL parked under some funky looking pole with a weird light transformer on it one time and had to hold the fob 3 inches from the start button to get it to read.. and my cars is only a year and month old..

I have not heard of the gas cap thing from anyone..not even with my 05 gto or 08 solstice gxp, our envoys or current Yukon... i think the "pretty common" thing was a bs from the dealer....... there would be a tsb on it before a recall. Recalls cost buuuukkko bucks..

There have been others who have experienced problems with the gas cap as you have. Why GM does not do anything about it is a good question, no answer that I know of. As for the key fob, it could be interference with the other fobs in your pocket. Try without anything else in your pocket and see if that does it, if not could be the fob battery.

the thing about these "triple" click gas caps is, some folks turn them way too man clicks... which makes them wear out much quicker.

The design of the vette gas cap (mechanics) is no different that any other gm gas cap used on models incorporating this type of gas tank seal. Some wear out much quicker depending on the owners habits.

You could be right, I have no facts to dispute you, just letting the op know others have had the same issue, thanks.

yes, I've read also of gas cap issues/breaks. should it be related to emissions? I think so.

and as to the clicks, years ago I heard you're only supposed to go one past the initial. don't know if that's true, but that's what I've been doing. kinda like the torque wrench thing, I think.....

fob, can't say if it's years on batt. or what. mine does, or did that occasionally; used to do it more frequently when I carried other keys (non-self opening kind). I don't do that any more. fob on nylon strap which is attached to carabiner-style clip and house key on it, too. no other car keys. attach to belt loop and into pocket. so far, so good.

I guess try the batt. change thing and see if that helps. if not , experiment with less keys/fobs in the pockets maybe. oh, and make sure it's fob 1; I had difficulties using fob 2.

No issues with my gas cap ('08) but a friend with an '08 has had the key FOB issue. Not sure if it's a cross-talk issue with another FOB.

Thanks everyone, for the help. Fob appears to be just a weak battery. I replced it and it seems to work just fine. The car is 3 years old last month and so that's probably what it was.

As for the gas cap, I like the notion that the more clicks the faster it wears out. I'm a serial clicker.

Aren't recalls only related to personal safety issues thus the gas cap thing might be more of a TSB thing?

When the FOB Not Detectedd comes along, the first thing that should be checked is a cell phone (or charger, even worse) in the console or cup holder. Phone might be the interferring item.

Go get one the autozone for 7 bucks you can twist the crap out of it and it won't break...

One reason the oem breaks is people push down on it while letting it click a hundred times while they turn it to the right....two clicks and you are good to go. it can only get so tight.
