Meaning of the LS designation?

I don't think it means anything. LS2, LS3, LS7, LS9, etc. are simply RPO (regular production option) codes just like F55, Z51, 3LT, L88, etc. There doesn't seem to be any logic behind how they're determined.

LS is shorthand at GM for "lotsa stuff," which is just how I would describe the Corvette engine. If it didn't mean that, would they have used it for racing and for the new Camaro? Obviously not!

I thought I remembered reading somewhere, someone stated the "T" (as in LT1) stood for Type and the "S" (as in LS1) was Series. Or something like that.
I believe the LT was Generation II, and the LS was Generation III+
I could VERY well be way off though.

There is a Chevrolet engineer somewhere deep in the bowels of GM that knows the answer. If he told us they would have to kill him so we all may go to our graves mystified by this age old question.
