I truly am thankful for your original post. The reason I assumed the key end went in first was that the key was out to operate the trunk switch and I assumed ( remember the word assume breaks down to making an ***...out of U and ME ) that the end showing metal where the key came out must lock into some sort of electrical connection. Only after removing glove box screws and looking to see if there was an electrical connector did I see what appeared to be an electromagnetic ( non-contact ) programmer. If it had not been for this thread, I would probably still be doing it wrong. You are sincerely appreciated for helping us all. This is what makes Corvette forum a great place! Endless thanks to CCLIVE!

If that fob is destroyed, then you need to do the long procedure. You still need to test the glovebox slot. Read all the instructions and understand them before you begin.

I purchased another fob and programming via your instructions worked great!

Thanks out to Bluewasp for the fob!

Only thing, when adding 3rd fob, dic said 4th fob so I'm guessing prior owner had #3. Is there a way to erase #3 (without long procedure) or just stick with what I have?

So then I'm guessing you did the short procedure, which added that new fob as the next consecutive number. If there were three fobs already added to the car, then the next (last) would be #4. You cannot delete individual fobs...the only way to delete any is the long procedure, which deletes all and starts over with the ones you currently have. If you don't have four fobs, then somewhere out there is a fob that will work on your car..

Default Can't get into FOB programming mode

Both my original FOB's failed. I bought a new FOB and followed the long form of the programming instructions. It work perfectly and the FOB worked fine. I purchased another FOB as a backup. Now when I went to program that FOB using the short procedure (since I have a working FOB) I am unable to get the vette to enter programming mode. I tried multiple times making sure the driver window was down, the working FOB was on the console and the trunk and glove compartment was open.
I went to Zip's in Mechanicsville, VA and the tech said that the vette will only allow a certain number of times to enter FOB programming mode. After that, you must go to a dealer and use the TECH2 (??) to program additional FOB's. Their cost $125. Can anyone verify this as fact. I can't see spending $125 to have a backup FOB. If this is true, I may have a new FOB for sale. Thanks for any and all feedback.

I do not believe this but I have never heard anyone authoritative say it either. Do you have any reason to think that your car has had fob programming done many times? I have done mine many times and it still works fine. So I can't say for sure that it is not true, but my instinct is that it is not. Read all the tips and tricks in the many pages of this thread and try again. The most common place for problems, by far, is getting the car into the program mode. You could also try doing the long procedure again and then program both at that time.

I should also say that it is highly unlikely that you have two fobs that failed...they are very simple solid state devices and unless crushed or drowned (and many survive the water), one may die, but I would bet against both failing. Bad battery connections or batteries themselves are the most common reason for a fob to stop working.

Default Tried long procedure but it doesn't register the key

Hi there, my name is Emanuel, I have a 2006 C6 base coupe automatic, bought it wrecked and repaired it, few things left to do, I have a new fob and trunk key, tried the long procedure but it looks like the 5 time turning doesn't work, I tried at least 10 times with 20 times each...windows have always been down since when I bought it, never had the original fob, it has an after market stereo gps by pioneer and an ipod plug aftermarket as well... I had read a while back somewhere that in the event the key lock wouldn't register the key turns it could be manually done at the ignition....know anything about it? is it the pigtail plug at the back inside the trunk , I see it has somewhat of a solenoid or at the starter button? any ideas? the airbag is deployed if that has anything to do with it... Thanks in advance,
Emanuel G

The fobs are different between my 2006 and 2009, but near as I can tell it's just a matter of including the master key in a slot in the 2009 unit. Of course they are quite different visually. Do the same programming instructions apply to both? Thanks for the great write-up!

Yes, they are electrically the same. As far as function, a C6 fob is a C6 fob.

Was having issue with FOB #1, mine of course, and did the long procedure. Thanks for all time and effort for this procedure.

Works great!

Thank you, Elmer and CClive, and everyone else for maintaining this thread. '06 Z06, and the important (missing) step was putting it into reverse. #@*$!!* GM. Otherwise a completely awesome car...
Thanks again!

Hello Everyone - new member with a FOB problem

I have a 05 coupe in the USA. I use the car rarely (only 20k since I bought it new) but have had zero problems before last week

Discovered the car would not normally start with either FOB. Dealer told me to replace the FOB battery - no luck

They then told me to replace the car battery and keep it on a tender - done but still no luck

The car will start and drive with either FOB in the glove box slot but neither FOB will work normally (can't lock doors, etc)

I found this post and thought I found the solution

However after carefully following the directions my DIC does not go into the Slot Testing Mode (short) but goes directly into the Program Mode (long). The DIC displays "Off/Acc to learn" not "Ready for FOB" is noted in your instructions

I am heeding your warning to test the slot first so I do not want to proceed

Does the fact the I can drive the car with the FOB in the slot confirm the
slot works? And means it's safe to continue to the program mode?

It appears from your very detailed instructions that the steps to access the short and long procedures are the same. How does the car determine which mode to enter??

I'm sure I'm missing something here - please help!! Thank you

There is one key difference between short and long procedures and that is whether (short) or not (long) a working fob is inside the car when the key is turned five times to enter the programming mode. If the car detects a working fob in the car when turning the key, it enters the short mode and simply adds the fob as the next number, leaving current fobs intact. If it sees no working fob inside the car, then it erases all working fobs and replaces them with new ones inserted in the slot...the first one in the slot will be #1.
In your testing, did the buttons on the fob work? Could you pop the trunk with the trunk button on the fob? How about the panic button?
I do not think that re-programming will fix this. It sounds like it could be interference between fob and antenna...maybe a cellphone or charger or something plugged into the cig lighter plug maybe. You could also try putting the fob in a different location or two within the car when you try to start it...passenger seat, top of dashboard, top of console etc. Unplug any accessories.
When the car says OFF/ACC TO LEARN, it is ready to start one of the three 10-minute waiting periods in the long procedure, when you push the bottom half of the START button. At the same point in the short procedure, there is no waiting period, so the car will say READY FOR FOB XX, where XX is the next sequential fob number. I would want to see KNOWN FOB before being absolutely sure that the slot is working properly.

Thank you cclive for your quick reply.

It seems the car is not detecting either of the FOBs. I tried both FOBs in several locations, even in the glove box - no luck. Moved the car into the driveway and even down the street to a park - no luck. Nothing plugged in the car, no cell phone, everything stock in the car, even the radio. Nothing changed in the car from time FOB worked to non-work. FOB worked, car sat for a month and then didn't work

At this point it seems like a trip to the doctor is needed. Is this something only a Chevy dealer has the tool for? To be honest I'm not very impressed with my local dealer. I'd much rather find a shop that specializes in Corvettes to do the work. Any recommendations in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Thank you!!

This sounds like a fob battery problem to me. If you can start the car with the fob in the glove box slot then it does not need to be reprogrammed. I would try a different brand of fresh battery and make sure its installed in the right direction in the fob.

I didn't mention the fob batteries because he said that he or the dealer had replaced them both...but the symptoms certainly are consistent with dead fob batteries, and the fact that it sat for a month would make it even more likely. I agree that another fob battery replacement would be a good idea. It has been documented here on the forum that people have replaced the batteries incorrectly with exactly these results. It is easy to put the battery in upside down. He should check this carefully.

Great news and kinda bad news - well more like embarrassing news

Great news: car is fixed!!! Both FOBs working with full function

EVRose hit it on the head - FOB battery issue

Embarrassing news: I opened one of the FOB to get the battery type and found the plastic package strip still on the top of the battery. I removed the strip and (hello!!) it worked perfectly. Same for FOB 2. Here's the embarrassing part - I took the FOBs to a camera shop as that is where the dealer said I could find the battery. The guy there told me he would put the batteries in for me if I could give him an hour. Sure save me the trouble while I had lunch. Never imagined a camera store guy could screw that up!!

Two lessons learned - check the basics first and if you want something done right do it yourself

Thank you EVRose and cclive - Happy New Year!!

Glad to hear that all is working! I had a friend who took her two Jeep fobs in to a dealer to have batteries replaced...they did it and returned both fobs to her broken and with a rubber band holding each one together...be glad the camera store guy didn't do that to you!
