One I'm looking at has been certified by GM and has the 12k/12,000 mile warranty b to b on it. It's an auto with only 13k miles. That may be worthwhile then buying from the dealer instead of private party on the 05 with all the issues listed? The warranty could prove to be worth thousands!

I'm looking in the 27-32k price range. I don't think the 06 is gonna work.

Thanks all for the fast replies!
Honestly, I think a 2006 a very doable in your price range. Believe me there are some deals out there. I bought my cherry 05 in Sept 08 for $28k with 28k miles (I paid $1 per mile) and it was 1sb/3lt with every option except z51 package. Prices have dramatically dropped since then. I love my 05 believe me but you should be able to afford an 06 easily IMHO. Since you're getting an auto youll even get the 6spd auto, stronger differential, along with quite a few imporovements.

We initially thought that the balancer would go (or not) by such and such miles or time. Unfortunately this has not been the case, and from time to time we still get reports of these early cars throwing their belts and doing major damage.

Thus I convinced my dealer to do mine prophylactically just a short time ago (July), after owning the car almost 5 years!

It's a big and complicated job, so they may not want to do it. Easier to sell the car to someone without this knowledge.

Thanks. I take it the car overheats and possible blown engine if you're not paying attention when the balancer gives way?

Good callout. I will add the 06 to my search now I guess, it can't hurt. Thanks for the info!

05 Convert here. 19K with Auto. Late build, vin 33248. Only issue was wheel alignment....at 12K excessive front tire wear on edges. Alignment at different specs took care of it. Rarely, door will not open from inside, hit unlock button, then all is ok.
On the A4 vs. A6 issue: my cousin hotrods the A6 and is always beaten by the A4's. Awhile back, a thread here discussed the spirited driving benefits of the A4 over the A6, as I recall.
I have the F55 suspension and do not feel much difference to my buddy's standard suspension.
Personally, I would avoid the Navigation system. You lose 5 cd's and gain a relatively poor nav.
I painted the center console flat black, got tired of the glare off of the silver.
BEST MOD to date - just installed the dual-mode (NPP) muffler system off of an 08,and the mild to wild controller. Wow.
Have fun....
