I laugh at the people saying don't buy a used ZHZ because it has certainly been beat on when it is clear that any used Corvette is very likely to have been just as beat on, especially when we hear statements like, "I don't think adding a supercharger (or heads cam etc...) and then driving the car hard would be considered beating on it. That's how a corvette is supposed to be driven." It is just the way most will be treated and any buyer needs to start evaluations with that in mind.
Many used and apparently stock Vettes have been RETURNED to that condition and the owner will probably not reveal that.
I think that it is much more likely that a rental would get 'beat on' more than a regular car. It's only used by someone for a few days so they are not concerned with being easy on it. I that's somewhat true for any rental let alone a Corvette. People who have never driven one before are surely going to see what it can do. Some rent them with the sole intent of racing it, street or track. I'm not even so sure that Hertz is concerned with proper maintenance for these beat on Vettes. For these reasons I would never buy one.
I would think, other than some tire wear and Brakes, the Rental Car would not suffer much if any long term damage. Just because you push the gas down hard, it does not hurt the car... we all do it... it is made to take it. My guess, if you keep oil changed, it will go 300,000 miles, without much problem... The Vette is a great car...

Mine's been SC'd since this spring and it has not been tracked or raced. It has had a few spirited runs but no burn outs or abuse. Not everyone mods a car to thrash it. I wanted 500+rwhp with the ability to put the top down. My choice was SC, others go for the cam route.
I really disagree. I depends on the car, and the driver. My ProCharged 2005 has 45k on the clock and makes 550 rwhp, and I'm on the original clutch, and the second set of tires. Yes I like to push it on the interstate every once in a while, but the car has never done a burn out or been shifted hard. When you consider the ProCharger doesn't make any boost until over 3000 rpm, the engine really doesn't know it there. And when you start to think about it, considering the total amount of time the engine is actually running, the time under boost is miniscule. Not saying the any car can have the crap beat out of it, stock or modded. But, just because a car is modded doesn't necessarily mean its a piece of junk. Most guys that mod their car, especially if they did the work themselves, take a heck of a lot better care of the equipment that many irresponsile driver of stockers. At least I know my car is treated like the fine piece of equipment it is.
I actually know a guy in his late 70s that has cam, exhaust, supercharger, and never runs it hard. He got it for car shows! Now I know this is not the norm, but they are out there.
