06 console update
I have a 06 ragtop and I wanted to update the console to the new 08 carbon fibre look when they came out, but GM told me the clips were different and it would not fit. Has there been a retro fit introduced yet? I tought I could do it while the car is stored over winter.

I also put the '08 console in my '06 (coupe). There were no problems other than having to modify the F55 switch. If you don't have F55 it should be a direct swap with no modificaitons. If you have F55 Ray Kawal has instructions for making the switch conversion pigtail.

Ditto as well. I installed an 08 console in my 05 which is the hardest to do because of the orientation of the power receptacle in the console. However, it was still easy to do and fit without any issues. The clips matched right up.

Forgot to mention, I also have the F55. I bought the adapter cable from Ray Kawal. The cable and his instructions for removing and putting the console together were great. Search for Kawal, he is a Forum member.

If you happen to have a red interior, Gene at GMPARRTSHOUSE.COM has the one withe the red CF and it looks great (I had it in my 2008 coupe) He has a picture on his site under "C Parts List"

Ray used to make and provide the conversion pigtails for a nominal cost. I don't know if he does this any longer but it would be worth checking with him.

The mod you're considering is a great one. You'll love it, trust me. You might consider going the DS Vettes route. Gerardo starts with a factory bezel (either the 2008-09 style or the 2010 style), removes the "pleather" from around the edge, and replaces it with stitched leather. You choose the color(s) you want for the leather and the stitching. It's especially cool if you have a 2-tone interior; the leather around the edge of the console bezel can be done in the same 2 colors as the 2-tone interior.
One other thought - if you upgrade the console bezel, you might as well do DSV's leather shifter and e-brake boots! Here's a pic to give you an idea:
