Default Removing Front Plate Bracket

I'm shopping for a used C6 and, I've noticed in pictures that some have the UUUUGLY front plate mount. How is it attached? I saw a post that mentioned douple sided tape. If that is how it is attached, can it be removed without damaging the paint? If not, any car with a front plate will not make it to my short list - no matter how good the rest of it looks.

Thanks

Les

If you're talking about the stock GM plate mount, it is mounted using double sided tape. I would think you could use a hair dryer to heat the tape before removing the mount. Double check the plate mount to make sure the previous owner didn't also use screws into the fascia.

Typ the GM mount is attached with three round adhesives pads on the back side however some dealers have actualy screwed these on. To determine what method of attachment you have, remove your license plate from the GM mount. If you do not see any screws you're in luck What you should see are three circular depressions. This is where the adhesive pads are located on the back side. You can heat these locations with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and then pull up the bracket slowly. You can also use dental floss to cut thru the adhesive using a sawing motion. The GM brackets come off faily easily. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

Best Regards

I always heard fishing line worked great since it's a lot tougher than floss.

Default Before you remove the holder

remove the four license plate mounting screws. The ones that come in the kit with the holder from GM are too long and can dimple/cut into the bumper fascia. If you remove the 4 plate mounting screws, you may be able to determine whether the fascia has been compromised. Good luck.

Exactly right. My plate holder wouldn't stick because the screws were too long. Had to get shorter ones at the hardware store, and then double-sided 3M molding tape at AutoZone.
