Default Check Engine Light

Came on for the first time yesterday and I'm not sure why. Is there any easy way to check for codes like a diagnostics mode or do I have to get a scanner to try and read the code? Also is there a list somewhere of all the codes? I tried using search, but came up with very old threads only. Thanks

Don't think so cause I filled up a couple of weeks ago and light is just now coming on. Where do you get the Predator? Is that simply a scan tool?

No. My mechanic used it early on to fine tune the stock tune for our elevation etc...

My engine light came on this summer and I used the Predator to see what was up. The code was a misfire. It was super hot and I was running a little lean. Took care of the problem myself and reset the check engine light. It's handy to have. This way you don't have to run to the dealer every time it comes on.

Yes it does.It won't fix the issue but will tell you what it is as well.Any AUTO ZONE or place like that can read your vette too and for free.

Thanks. I thought they do, but wasn't sure. No Autozones out here, but I'm sure Checkers will do it as well.

Costco has a small code reader device that will also clear codes and its CAN enabled. Don't hold me to this, but I think it was like $30. I was going back tomorrow to buy one for my son, for Christmas. I was in there the other day and the price label was missing, so I'm not sure on that price.

Ok, I bought it just now from Costco. Its a "Code Key", model 375265 and it was $34.99. Since its a gift, I'm not going to open it, but it states its good for all ODBII's and CAN

If you have a scanner that does not provide a word version of the code, you can easily look up the code by entering it into a Google search.

Example: A search for P0021 yields a website called engine-light-help.com which offers the following:

How does a P0021 code trigger the check engine light? This code will trigger the check engine light under the following condition:

The comprehensive component monitor, referred to as the CCM, monitors the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) position for over-advanced cam timing. If the cam timing exceeds a maximum calibrated limit or is stuck in an advanced position, the check engine light will come on and set this trouble code.

Possible Causes:

Incorrect camshaft timing
VCT solenoid valve stuck open or continuous oil flow to piston chamber
Camshaft advance mechanism binding, or faulty VCT unit

Diagnostic Help:

This check engine light code is caused by a mechanical fault of the VCT unit or related components, so there is no need for electrical diagnosis. Possible symptoms may include rough idle, stall or hard start. Refer to manufacturer specific component tests for the VCT unit. You may also use the "Get Help" link if you need specifications or have any other related questions. Remember to refer to an appropriate manual for specific instructions.

Got a friend who has a Costco membership so I'll have them check if we carry these out here.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Appreciate the inputs and information.

Well it actually did turn out to be a loose gas cap. Got in the vette last night and check gas cap was displayed once the car started up. Opened up the gas door and sure enough the gas cap was not tightened on. Tightened up the gas cap and the check engine light went off. Thanks for the replies.

Yeah that is what I was thinking and why I did not think it was the gas cap initially. I did have a hard time getting the cap back on though. Kept sounding like there was air being pushed from the tank or like it was trying to get a seal or something.

Could your gas cap be defective?
