Trick question and a good one. The devil's in the details.
-- In routine paddle-mode street driving, there's no need to ease-up on the throttle during an upshift. It's not like a manual trans, which you usually release the gas pedal when shifting up (unless you're power shifting).
-- At a dragstrip, easing into full-throttle after launch, all e-nannies on... I'm not sure what would happen if you tried to paddle shift up just before/during/after hitting the rev limiter. My guess is the tranny would pause & try to decide what to do, while the e-nannies try to maintain traction and the rev limiter kills power. Not the fast way down the track.
-- From pg 4-9 of the 09 owners manual:
"When traction control is turned off, or Competitive Driving Mode is active, it is possible to lose traction. If you attempt to shift with the drive wheels spinning with a loss of traction, it is possible to cause damage to the transmission. Do not attempt to shift when the drive wheels do not have traction..."
It does not specify whether this applies to manual and/or auto transmissions. I'm guessing that the auto trans has programming that prevents a shift when the rear wheels loose traction, but I'm not going to test it.
Lots of other scenarios, but I think you get the idea. Did you have an experience that made you ask the question?
I have no delay on upshift ; esp when hauling butt. Works better on road track.
What year is yours? Mine's an '08 and there is a 0.5-0.6 second delay between when I hit the '+' button and when the shift actually starts (upshift). Downshifts are faster than upshifts on my '08.

I have an 08 a6 z51 with 36000 mi and when i hit the upshift its right now with no delay. I mainly use the paddles on the track as I find around town they make me drive too fast!
