Default Possible New Owner

Hello all,

I am new to this site and Corvettes overall but i knew this would be the best place to get info on a C6. I am thinking about purchasing a Manual 2005 C6 with the Z51 preformance package and about 45,000 miles on it. I was wondering if you guys could maybe give me a few pointers to look out for or any recommendations, also is there any common issues or problems with the 05's.

Here is a link to the car: (http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...=64669807&ct=p)

also what is the average life span of a corvette i.e. Mileage & Year

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated Thank you,
Devon

the car looks clean and probably a fair/slightly high price from what I can tell from little photos. This car is not rare with this loaded package, I also own a c6 z51 m6. You can do a search here and find a lot of opinions as to "problems" an 05 might have. Personally, I and many others have had nothing but joy with our 05 cars. You might want to ask in the "local and regional" section here on the forum. Someone might know this car and someone in Southern CA might be able to look at it for you. Another suggestion is look at cars for sale here on the forum. Many cars here are owned by fanantics who take very very good care of Corvettes and offer them at good price to value.
pm if I can help more

Millenium Yellow was on 6.2% of all 2005 coupes. Four other colors had fewer numbers built.

Search NHTSA Office of Defects Investigations database for TSB that were issued by GM. While not all vehicles will experience the problems identified, they were common enough that GM issued the TSB.

I apprecite all the input keep it coming, I plan on offering around $25,500 for it because i do think it is a little much, but as far as the mileage is 45,000 a lot for a vette?

45,000 is not a lot of miles for that car from a durability standpoint; on the other hand, there are many 2005 owners here with a lot less miles than that. Mine, for example, has about 16,000 miles on it. My only point is that if you look around you may find a vehicle with 1/2 of those miles for an equivalent price. I think you might see a difference in overall condition of the car (paint, chips, interior wear, etc) between a 45,000 mile car and a lower mileage unit. It all depends what you are after and how picky you are personally (everybody thinks they are picky but trust me, there is picky and then there is PICKY regarding vehicle appearance). They tend to chip on the front and lower third of the hood due to the low front end. They can also have significant chipping on the leading edges of the wheel wells behind the tires, especially in the front without splash guards. This is all cosmetic - but to some of us it's a big deal. If the original owner has a big butt and slides down the seat to get in you'll likely see some seat bolster wear on the driver's side. Early 2005s had an issue with the crank pulley walking off the end of the crankshaft. Manual 2005 models must be stopped with the transmission in reverse or electronics are not shut off totally and the battery will drain. The 2005 has a reported weaker differential that can "blow" if abused - to that I say bring any manual trans C6 over and I'll bet I can blow your differential up.

Bottom line - I would have no fears of purchasing a 2005. I have never had regrets about my purchase decision. I would not purchase sight unseen, however. I wouldn't do that for any used vehicle.

I bought my 06 F55/M6 with about 18k miles and paid just under $28 for it. (about 5 mos ago) It was a SoCal car as well and had a virtually flawless exterior/interior which is why I probably paid a couple grand more than I would have liked for a three year old car. Maint records a must. Definitely worth getting someone to put it up on a rack for you. Two that I looked at before I bought mine we discovered a number of major hits to the undercarrige where the owner had bottomed out the car in a big way. (Dukes of Hazzard ?) It's the little things that will tell you how the car has been treated. Look at the chin spoiler to see how aggressive the car has been run over bumps. If it's brand new, that means they replaced it, cause nobody can drive one of these without hitting it sometimes. Another warning sign that somebody is trying to hide stuff. I'd probably rather have a pampered 40k car from a forum member than a 15k car that has been beat on. (just my 2 cents) Good luck and good hunting.

Contrary to some of the other threads that trash this forum, this is the type of stuff that shows what a great bunch of folks Corvette Owners are most of the time. Great job GregC6! You are helping out a future fellow Corvette owner. Awesome!

Good luck with your purchase. I have driven some of my vettes over 100,000 miles and had good luck with them. The C-6 seems very reliable to me.

Zymurgy, i checked the TSB for the 05 C6 and it came back with like 133 results and then on the 06 it only came back with like 60 results is that just because it is the first year of the C6 and if so does a Service bulletin mean that they will fix the problem for free like a recall or is that just a list of all the most common problems.

TSBs are not the same as a recall. Recalls are for safety issues and must be remedied by the manufacturer regardless of warranty status. TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) are solutions to problems that have occurred frequently but are generally only provided free if the item is still under warranty. In some cases, a dealer and/or GM may elect to perform the service as a goodwill item out of warranty.

Not sure why the significant difference in the number of bulletins for '05 vs '06. Certainly some of it has to do with first model year problems.

I found it interesting to see the car spent so much time in Denton, TX and is now in Southern CA. Denton is my hometown. I currently live about 110 miles from there now.

Good luck on your decision.
