I'm thinking about buying a 2005 Yellow C6 Corvette with 22,000 miles on it. The asking price is $29,000. The car is in excellent shape. It is fully optioned except for the Z51 package. It has the A4 transmission.
I'm looking for opinions on this buy and what to look for when purchasing this vehicle. Thanks in advance.
The closest I could find with the same options was an 06 with 8,000 miles for 33,000. I possibly could talk the price down. This one has the A6 transmission. It also is Burgandy Red and the previous owner had ghost flames painted on both sides.
Thanks for the opinions so far. I would prefer a manual over automatic, but it is not a deal breaker. I'm sure the A6 is probably better lower gears and better mpg I would guess.
The key for me right now is value ratio. If I can get an 06 at $30,000, I would go for it. I could get a Camaro 2SS with RS package for $35,000.

I have a yellow 05 coupe with ~ 16K miles on it and I certainly wouln't sell it for $29K. I believe it's the only year that offered Millenium yellow, which I personally prefer over the velocity yellow. I also have the A4 tranny - It's bulletproof and I love it. I do not have the Z51 option, but did install Z51 sway bars, Koni FSD shocks, and Baer cross drilled rotors. the stock ride was great, but I wanted to autocross, so I went to the Z51 sways. They are significantly larger than stock and do make a difference, but only cost $100 and I installed them myself in about an hour. Mine is also fully optioned otherwise and I am one of those who are really nuts about the HUD - keeps your eyes on the road at all times. I don't use the NAV system much. The only thing I don't like about the 05 is the XM wart on the roof. Other years don't have it.
If I remember correctly didnt the 05 model start out with the Mmillennium Yellow, and then part way thru the 05 model year it changed to the Velocity Yellow.

IIRC, I read that the A6 has a 2.56 rear axle while I know that my C5 A4 had a 2.73 rear axle. However, the transmission will likely be a factor in gearing as well, just like on the 1/2-ton Silverados. My truck, with its 3.42 axle/6-speed, is rated for the same towing as the 3.73/4-speed trucks. Not apples to apples maybe, but food for thought.
One other thing to consider, as mentioned above, is that the shade of yellow changed from 05-06. I kind of like the newer vs. the older (Velocity Yellow vs. Millennium Yellow) but it's all personal preference.
Good luck in your search; it sounds like we're in just about the same boat right now.
The dealer (Carmax) just called me and they think the 05 has the Z51 package. They can't confirm that until tomorrow. He thinks it has it because of the cross drilled rotors on the front. He is also checking on the actual color of yellow for me. I personally think all the yellows I've seen look great. I didn't put that this one has DVD also as does the 06 I'm also now looking at.
I've check within 150 miles of my location and I'm not finding the deals that some of you think should be available. I was hoping to get a deal by waiting for winter.
29K for an 05' isn't horrible, but not great. You won't get the best deal from Carmax, but if it's the car you want get it. Cross drilled rotors probably means Z51 unless the previous owner added them.
I bought an 05' millennium yellow C6 last Feb. and I'm ABSOLUTELY LOVING this car. I hope you enjoy yours as much.

I live in Tulsa and unless you want to drive across the country, it's not a bad price. For some reason, Vettes are selling for less in other parts of the country, but I've found that most 05s in this area are still around 30K. I have an 05 yellow vette. Mine is Millennium yellow as they most both MY and VY in that year. I would check to see which color yellow it is. Anyway, sounds like a good deal, but you might be able to go 27.5-28 K.
You do not state the trim level of this car....!? Makes a difference, 1LT vs 3LT.....do you know the history of this car and have you run a Carfax on it!?
$30,000 is very high for an '05, very high! i.e.: my '06,
9600 miles, 6mn, VY, Z51, 3LT, Navi, LoJack, etc only set me back $30k. And, it was a Southern Calif car. You just have to be in the right place at the right time....AND, just my opinion, but I would never buy an unknown car from Carmax. If they do not even know it is a Z51, walk away from them!
I don't know what you ability to travel to pick up the car may be, but that price for a local '05 is a little on the strong side.
If you do a little research here on the 'Vettes for sale part of the forum, you may be armed with better information to talk them down a bit on the price on the one you are looking at.
There is nothing to fear about the A4. It was produced for years and is fairly bulletproof. You will run the same RPM's on the highway as the A6, as both highway gears are deep overdrives.
Your dealer can check the sticker in the glove box as an easy way to see if it has Z51 - - apart from the drilled rotors. I have an early `05, built in September `04 and fully optioned.
I think the A4 transmission is just fine . . .performance and fuel mileage are excellent and at 26k miles, repairs have been nominal.
Pricewise, I'd say it's a strong price that should reflect a very well maintained car that needs little. So do your homework- have someone pull a VIS report that willd etail dealer and warranty work performed - - not a Car Fax.
As a piece of mind issue, you may want to explore extended warranty plans available including the GMPP coverage that's mileage/year priced.
If you're not well-versed on C6's, take someone with you or ask for help here on the Forum - -you'd be amazed at how truly helpful folks here can be.
Good luck- and be sure to post pictures when you bring her home !
Just my gut feel, but I think 30K is a bit high. Before buying my 05 (new) I tested the manual trans and did not like it. Throws were too long. You should do this test....join the Vet club in KC and make some friends. I also tested the standard suspension versus the magnetic, and couldn't tell the difference. But went with magnetic anyway. As others have said the A4 tranny is bulletproof. Then there's the HUD and heated seats, again, which I feel is mandatory. DVD? NO NO not a great system and I could not give up the 6 disk changer -- over 1,000 MP3 songs. Good luck and make sure you give it a good test drive AND have a independent mechanic check it out.
