I was looking for a jacking puck, and I found they are app $50 for 2... I did a little measuring and was able to go to the local machine shop & get a piece if 3" solid aluminum cut to any thickens I want for $5 from the scrap pile.
I got one piece cut and I think I'm set.. as I only jack up one wheel at a time I don't need two or 4 as some are selling...
I don't need the twist to lock it in place, all I want to do is put it on top of my floor jack to jack one tire to put on my slicks...
Am I missing something, I know mine is NOT powder coated, or polished, but it did work when I jacked up the car...
Will I be running into problems in the future ?? Maybe the pucks on sale here are better quality than my solid aluminium... ? What am I missing..?
JPee,
You seem like the DIY hockey puck type of guy (and I mean that as a sincere compliment)... don't fall for the color matching, billet aluminum, set of manufactured jacking pucks (unlike others on this forum :o)

I agree ... there are some aftermarket things I like that I would PAY for because I can't make them the same quality as the vendor, however for something as simple as a jacking puck... Its so easy Even A Caveman Can Do It LOL
had trouble locating hockey pucks so found some "used" aluminum pucks and keep them in the car. had to have a regular lift used for a tire repair and having 4 lifting points came in handy.
I think that the biggest possible problem is possible slippage or car sliding, but probably unlikely. That is one of the things that I don't like in jacking the Vette. I just wish that they had better made jacking points. I'm not keen on setting the car on jacking pucks and jack stands. I have metal pucks I just bought but are having second thoughts on using with jack stands, especially jacking one side at a time! I'm afraid of slippage. Any thoughts?
Yes I tend to agree re slippage. I have never used the pucks with stands - I jack up a corner at a time and slip 4" of plywood under the wheel. Now if I want to remove a wheel, I would use the front/rear jacking point locations, and use the jack stands there.
Fear of slippage is always the reason I like to lock the pucks in place. However, IMHO, I wouldn't drive around with them
I do have a lift, which makes life a lot easier, However, I store the car on low ramps in case I want to "play" during the winter sleep.
I just ordered the ones from BMW and yes they increased from the ones I put on my 05. I forgot to take them off when I traded it for the Grand Sport. The only reason I like them is you install them and they are there forever. Just my .02
