Sorry, everyone here can argue with me but I trust the quality control on a US made part such as a drain plug more than one made in China, that is why I asked. After reading the posts regarding the rare earth magnets, I think that making my own is the way to go.
My only advise when considering a magnetic drain plug......
If you MUST have one, buy the best. Many have a "token " magnet in the end of the plug. Yeah, it's magnetic....but just barely. A friend has one, that was purchased on line, that will pull the fillings from your mouth. He actually lifts a very large open/box end wrench with it. If I find the picture I'll post it.
Here's the photo....
yes old thread but what kind of drain plug is that?
Magnetic plugs are not meant to "remove" fragments from the oil (that is the job of an oil filter). Magnetic drain plugs are inspection gauges that "catch" ferrous material and let you see debris that is (has been) circulating within your engine. Consider it a warning device.
Roger that. Years ago I found needle bearings on a mag plug on my LS1, engine was still quiet. The early warning promoted me to get warranty repairs before warranty expired.
Likely any particles would be caught in the oil filter. Magnetic plugs are more for manual transmissions to catch gear grindings.
But I believe they are available.

One advantage the magnetic drain plugs have is that the oil plug has a change to grab any steel shavings in the oil pan sump before the oil is passed through the oil pump. After going through the oil pump, the oil is sent through the filter, before being sent through the engine.
Very cheap $$$$ for a product that can keep some crap from being sent through the oil pump, with the resulting wear(damage) to the oil pump.
