I think you missed something...I NEVER signed anything. When I asked them to fax me a copy of my signature on a contract I was told they couldn't locate it......I told them that was because I never signed anything except the check I sent them over a year ago.
Then they are out of luck. They extended your service without your agreement or permission and they have nothing to show that you agreed to auto renewal. Therefore they cannot demand payment for service that you did not ask for or agree to accept.
Here's the best way to deal with XM, and EVERYBODY should do this right now. Cancel now! Call them up, and tell them, that at the end of your current, paid for, contract, that you want to cancel your service. Request a conformation number, and the name of the supervisior that your dealing with. I did this the very same day I renewed my contract last year. My service will end on 5/11/10, and THEY KNOW that. This way, when you call back to renew, you're coming from a position of strength. This makes it much eaiser to get the $77 deal, which is now $80 something a year.
The original deal code, Zwinback, but that was like two years ago. Basically you say that you want the $77 deal, they will say that that deal is no longer available at all, there is some sort of artist's fee now, then you say, well, ok, then that's it, then they'll say that for $82 and change that you can have your service for a year. That's pretty much it, if you hit the wall with one person there, call back and ask for a supervisor. Be nice, and be persistent, it's worked for me for two renewals with XM.

Welcome to another club that nobody wants to belong to. I ran a thread about a month ago about my latest horror story with them. They are scum of the earth. Just for grins do a search of the C6 section and you'll find your are not alone - not by a long shot.
In fact, just do a google search on XM billing problems. I promise you'll be blown away by what you find.

He'll be getting a call from a collections agency. Been their, didn't even get the t-shirt.
XM or SIRIUS, basically the same contracts. As soon as you sign up/pay, you agree to auto renewals. Does not matter how you pay. Once you have paid, you have entered into a binding contract where you agree to auto renewals. You MUST contact them to cancel. Period - end of discussion. So many people do not understand this part of the contract.
The person on the phone with you that could not produce some document that you signed just does not understand their contract either. There is nothing for anyone to sign - you pay, you agree to the terms.
I just canceled my SIRIUS contract before it came due next week. Had zero problems on the phone and they were actually very nice. Now did it really get canceled, I will have to wait and see, but I did get an email from them asking how I liked my Previous service, so that would seem to indicate it was in fact canceled.
To the OP, I understand you are very upset, but if you don't pay what is due, the next step is they will turn it over to a collection agency and it will hit your credit report.
What some folks also don't understand is how hard they make it to abide by their rules. When I signed up for mine I told them I didn't want it to auto renew, and the lady agreed to it. I documented the call.
Twice within a month after my service ended I even called and both times I was told my service had been cancelled and I owned them nothing. Two months later I was called by a collection agency.
If anyone did not understand what I just said, please read what I said again, and then explain to me how they didn't blatantly screw me. (I did get out of it, but it took some doing).

First of all, I completely agree with you....but read my post above.
The truth is that what needs to happen is that people need to quit doing business with them from the start until the get the message that they are one of the most hated companies in the history of the world.
BTW, here is a google search for some late night entertainment....
During my conversation with SIRIUS yesterday to cancel my service, they offered me another year at $55.00! I still said no thanks.
I had 2 SIRIUS radios on my account and asked for them both to be canceled right away, not when the subscriptions run out, but now! Told me I had a refund coming of $56.75! I will believe it when I see it.
I tried to cancel my XM and I got some $20 for 3 month offer (it would take me to fall). I said sure, but told the guy that I'm not renewing it after that. I sent in a cashiers check because of all the horror stories. All of the sudden it auto-renewed, which I was not warned about at all. I bitched and moaned and they "wrote it off" by giving me a few free months. I was told that they could not "pause" the account, but would be able to in December (09). I forgot to call on Dec 1st, I called on the 15th. They finally broke down and canceled the account - but they kept trying to get me to pay $14 for the 2 weeks of December. I kept saying no way, that the car hasn't been started for months. They said "ok". But a week later I got a bill. I threw that in the trash. I havn't seen anything since. I doubt I'd sign up again, I'd never renew it if they stuck me with the $14. Just over principal.
I just picked up a new VW TDi car as a daily driver, it came with 6 months of SIRIUS. Since I drive that every day, if they charged $55 for a year I'd probably take it.
Having read about all the horror stories of XM, I would never give them my credit card and paid by check. My yearly subscription expired the end of Dec and I would have thought the service stopped.....my Vert has been in the garage since before the holidays taking it's winter nap....
Today I get an invoice in the mail for a the month of January....I called and finally got a supervisor (so they told me). Got a run around that they could not cancel the invoice and I would have to pay.....told them there was NO way I would pay the invoice. I did NOT authorize the service and it should have been cancelled at the end of my current contract.
I hope that the time doesn't come that over-the-air radio service goes the way of analog television and rabbit-ear antennas. Every Corvette radio, except subscription type radios such as ours, would then become obsolete from a certain date.
The unusual practices at XM, (no regard for the riling-up the customers), could be because they need to keep the largest customer base possible at any cost, (including customer dis-satisfaction), till they can be bought out by a mega communications giant such as Comcast. This sounds far fetched, but so does what happened to t.v. service sound far fetched too. But it happened.
XM would then become a very minor player in the subscription radio business and the buying-out price would depend on how many of "their" radios are inside of vehicles.

Anyone else have this same issue??

You said: He "signed a contract with XM" I'm not sure if he did sign a contract with XM .. I didn't .. they just turned it on when I sent them a check. They hide the way you need to cancel in their contract.
If you decide to cancel XM Radio, be sure to call and cancel and get a confirmation number. I called and canceled but didn’t ask for a confirmation number. They didn’t turn off the radio until it was a month past due and now they want me to pay $48.51 (how they got that figure?). XM turned my account over to a company called “Collection Company of America”.
Do a Google search on that company. .. Many complaints about XM and CCA.
I received call from CCA and the guy tried to strong arm me into paying. After trying to reason with him I told him to come on down to my house and take the money out of my wallet.
I called XM and told them to stop the calls from CCA. They told me that they will get back with me in a week or so. This was on 09 02 2009 and as of this date I have not gotten a call back. We received one other call from CCA and my wife answered the phone and told the guy that I was working with XM. He started to lean on her and she hung up.

Thanks everyone. Just got an 07 coupe, and was mulling over getting XM,...until I read this. I've dealt with enough sleazy and slightly overly greedy companies in my life. comes with XM. Who needs it?
Since I'm new with XM radio and still have two months free left with my new GS do I have to call them and cancel before the end of my free three months? Will they start billing me if I don't?

Yes they will. I am one who has four cars with XM radios and NO service. Hate them.
