Default Crack in headlights

I'm wondering if anyone has a small crack in their headlights. I noticed that my 07 has 1 crack on both headlights, less than a 1/2" lenght. Called the dealer and of course my warranty expired in oct of 09. Looks do deep to polish out. Any suggestions, or do i need to buy two new headlights.

Are you sure they're cracks and not seams? The clear covers have seems or forming lines that look like cracks. It would be strange to have the same crack on both light covers.

Could you share any pictures of the cracks with us? It would help figure out the issue.

There is a recent thread on here from another guy with the same problem. It is a common problem with other manufacturer's as well. You cannot polish them out......they are real cracks.

Look for used ones somewhere first, would be my advice if you were itching to spend some money......but.....it's all depending on how bad they are. A few minor cracks as you are mentioning wouldn't even concern me. If you are getting bad internal condensation, then maybe you should replace them. You should have seen the other guys lenses......he had at least 50 cracks in each one.

How did you arrive at this being the same problem as the original poster. The OP states that he has 1 crack, less than a half inch on each headlight.

Dont forget to call your automobile Insurance policy agent. Comprehensive Coverage under glass. The plastic assembly is a form of glass. If its an actual crack and cannot be repaired I think you have a shot at coverage. Good Luck...

Man if you would have posted this yesterday I could have hooked you up with a very nice set of VR's unless you MR.

I took 3 sets of VY's and 1 set of VR's apart yesterday and painted the bezels black today.

Let me know which way you decide to go and I'll see if I can do something for ya.

Uuhhhmmmm.........they both said they had cracks in their headlight lenses and said cracks were the same size ? And I am sure that the fellow in France didn't get all of them at once either....probably got one, then 2, then 3, then 10.....etc......

carmenfull1......

If it's $1K I wouldn't be asking my insurance company to pay for it. They "may" want to take it out of your hide in premiums at the next renewal. Remember, claims history is usually what drives policy increases and then comes driving record. Probably 90% of my clients don't even buy glass coverage for this reason, as it usually costs $500 a year for the policy rider on an exotic, versus the actual glass cost, and amount of times it actually gets replaced over the usual average of 3 years of ownership (zero).

Corvette is hardly an exotic... not even close! Higher priced chevy is more like it! I have full glass on my Nationwide policy and it's 75 bucks a year. You replace just 1 HUD windshield and the coverage is well worth the that amound. BTW.. My entire insurance bill with everything is only about a grand year on my vette. It's the least expensive vehicle to insure that I own...

Not very easily but yes, it has been done. The lens is intended to remain a sealed unit and the lights are intended to be replaced as a unit. With that said, the lens is simply held on with a Urethane bond adhesive that can be cut away and the lens separated from the painted bezel. Not for the faint of heart. The more difficult part of the equation is actually getting a lens since it isn't sold as a part through GM dealers. Forum member RLSebring (posted above) has had a great deal of success in doing this and has come across a few lenses from time to time. He is really the one to talk to as he would be considered the forum expert in this matter.

Me neither. Most have went on White and Yellow which looks very good, IMO.

Probably have to pose that question to the red vettes that have went with black lights.

One of my head lights had what I would call micro fractures all the way around it. There was no obvious points of impacts anywhere on the light. I do not believe that it was from a single hit. Otherwise the cracks would have been specific to an area. I almost had a heart attack when I saw how much they cost to get replaced

Wondering what if any material defects there could be. Just a thought....

cthusker......

WOW !!! That is dirt cheap. I guess i would do the same if it only cost me that amount as well.

Up here car insurance costs have become a serious political hot potatoe for our sitting provincial goverment, something they would have lost the most recent election over had they not froze the public insurance companies rates, as we are getting royally screwed over by the insurance companies, who in turn get shafted by the automotive part suppliers.

I drive a 2009 SMART car as my D/D and a windshield replacement is over $600.......(no HUD, no RSW, no tint, etc, just a piece of glass)....and my glass coverage was $300 a year. I have a perfect record, am turing 50 this year, so for a $1MM liability and a $2,000 collision deductible (with no glass) on my policy I pay $1,100 a year. My last Porsche had a $1,100 windshield and glass coverage was $500 a year.

BTW the exact same cracking appeared on the rear taillight assemblies of a couple of Porsche 911's I owned. They were the 996 model. I blame defective parts from the suppliers.
