looking at a 06 with clear top. I would rather have a solid color silver top. Question is are they easy to trade or buy and how much. Any suggestions, I looked in parts for sale forum but did'nt see any silver, mostly glass for sale.
You might have to bite the bullet and purchase from one of our forum vendors for that. I have no idea if they come pre-painted or not. Most folks hold on to the solids and dump the transparent as you've probably noticed.
I purposely ordered both tops on my new GS. I've only had it 2 months but change the tops every couple of weeks. This may get old, but it really does give your Vette a totally different look.
Just my $.02.
You won't find as many painted tops for sale, especially in a specific color. It's usually the clear tops people think of as "optional", so they tend to pop up for sale more often. Plus, with Silver only being 15% or so of the total production, only 1 in 7 of the painted tops that do pop up would likely be your color.
The painted tops do not come painted from GM. So if you order one, you also have to pay to have it painted. So they usually end up being more expensive than the clear tops if you're buying them outside of the initial order process. But when they do pop up used for sale, they're less expensive than the clear tops because there's a more limited market for them.
Personally - I haven't used my painted top in about a year. Partially because I love being able to see through the top, and partially because of the weight difference. It's a small difference in weight, but a huge difference in ease of on/off when you have displaced discs in your lower back!
