Default WTK: paint C6 headlights...

I've been looking at black headlights for my car but the cost is just more than I want to pay just to acquire black headlights. Just can't justify paying more for two headlights than a new set of chrome spyder wheels! My question is are the C6 headlights assemblies vacuum sealed? I was wondering if they can be opened up, painted black, and re-assembled without risk of condensation accumulating inside the assembly?

I've never pulled a C6 headlight assembly. Is it a PIA?

Thanks

The headlights are intended to be a sealed unit. The polycarbonate cover is attached with a urethane bond adhesive very similar to what holds your windshield in place. They were not intended to be opened again. Baking them is not really the way to go as is often done on the imports. Cutting them open will be the best mechanical means of separating the lens cover from the painted bezel.

With that said, get in touch with forum member RLSebring. He is one of the few folks that has had pretty good luck (with a lot of trial and error leading up to it) at getting the lens assembly apart. He will be your best shot at either getting them open or finding you black light assemblies.

In terms of sealing them back up again you will need to dremel out all of the old adhesive and find a good urethane adhesive, get it all around the perimeter and closing them back up again. As far as moisture and contaminants getting back in, that will be totally dependent on your success in sealing the perimeter.

Pulling the assembly out will require the removal of the front wheel well liners, the front fascia and at least half of the attachment screws on the front fenders. The light assembly is held in place by three bolts under the light and inside the wheel well.

Take a look at this thread. IT has a lot of input from me aand a bunch of other forum members and may answer some questions.

Paul, I learned something new today about the headlight assemblies. That little rectangle on the bottom side of the housing is a membrain that's designed to let moisture out of the housing BUT not let any moisture in. I guess it's a one way breathable membrain.

I feel smarter...
