There is a metal piece that shows after the break. Grab it with needlenose pliers and pull it to open the box. I can't remember which end of it, but pull on one end or the other rather than right in the middle. Then on the inside, there are two TORX screws which will allow the entire latch mechanism to fall out. Its a 5 minute R&R. Be sure to save the lock cylinder from the broken latch to transfer over to the new one...expensive otherwise.

Add me to the list as I haven't broken mine either.....yet. It's an '08 that I bought in August of that year. Just turned 10K on the Vettes In The Village trip.

Default Mine broke too...

Add my car to the list here of broken latches. My car was produced in Feb 2008 and the handle is grey in color.

This seems like a plastics "formula" issue to me; my handle is so brittle that i literally used my fingers to snap the plastic away from the lock (3-4 different breaks) to free the lock after the handle broke.

My car is under warranty, but per my luck the day i called my dealership was the last day they were still part of GM. I have had such terrible experiences at the other local dealership i decided to order the part for $25 from Gene and do it myself. Maybe that's part of GMs' plan to reduce warranty work.

The replacement was easy, took maybe 10 minutes total.

I hope the new one lasts a lot longer!

Default WOW! I thought I was the only one!

Broke mine about four weeks ago. The glove box won't open at all, and the plastic finger piece broke, too.

Any further info I need before I have the dealer fix it at the next service?

Thanks to all for this thread.

Here is a picture of the broken latch. When it's installed, the metal handle is on the righthand side (as shown). You pull that down less than 1/4" of an inch and the glovebox will open.

Mine broke the day my lease was up and I was returning the car. Dealer didn't charge me anything for it.

Right on the money !!!!! THANK YOU What a poorly designed piece of ****..... GM should redesign & replace all that are on the street. I am ordering 2, just to be safe. Had my pistol in the glove box when the lock broke. Needless to say I was freaking out.

My 07 vert with cashmere interior broke earlier this year. Lots of discussion at that time as well. I think the common denominator was cashmere latches were mostly likely to break of all the colors. Someone thought if was the lack of carbon black in that color plastic to make it tougher.

Mine broke about a month ago. I'm not going to replace this thing over and over. I'm in the process of making one out of steel. I'll post pics when I'm done. This little stuff really turns people off when it comes to GM products.

Ordered & picked up a new latch within 1 day. They are stocked at the GM parts wharehouses. Mine is grey, so we have to add this to the color list also. Now to figure out the lock / tumbler issue. LOL

Add me to the list for a bad cashmere latch. I ordered one From Parts Taxi and had it shipped to TKO for some hydrocarbon/clear to match the rest of my interior. I bought a black one this time (stronger and cheaper). Should be in today or Friday. Will post pics when installed.

I had my cashmere latch break off in my hand today. The break looks just like the picture posted. I did a search, found this thread, and now know what to do. Thanks guys.

I broke mine about a year or so ago, started a thread like this explaining the problem, yeah it is more common as witnessed by all here as well, hope in the future that GM will take the time to correct, in the meantime, or perhaps with the multitude of vendors here, someone could design and sell a better replacement? ...Oh yeah and try to keep it under $100.00.???

Mine was broke on the 2008 I bought. Ordered a new latch. Got the glove box open and there was a Cobra Radar detector! Nice bonus.

ARGH! Mine just broke. I asked Kevin @ Parts Taxi for help identifying which color I have - it is either gray or Titanium and I know from a prior order that the stickers lie.

I bought a black one this time (stronger and cheaper)
Thinking about getting black instead if it is more robust. Anyone have a black one break?

Anyway, I found this nice YouTube about the R&R:
