I have 4LT, love it, and didn't pay close to $4k for it. More like $2600. If you don't like the 3LT dash then the 4LT is the way to go since you don't have to worry about airbag liability issues if you do mess with the dash.
And the cost of the 4lt would buy you a set of door panels and center arm rest from a popular vendor. Yes, you can build a nicer interior than the 4LT but for factory it is real good.
You don't see many of them so it is nice to be unique.
Not sure were people come up with the $4K figure.
Maybe if they pay MSRP.
As you can see everyone loves what they have...I personally have 3LT...but I'm sure if you got the 4LT there is little to no chance you'd wish you didn't have the leather interior...however if you got the 3LT you'd be kicking yourself if you started thinking "why didn't I get the 4LT...: GET IT!!!
As nice as 4LT is, it doesn't finish the job IMO. If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't include a leather shifter **** or e-brake handle; it also doesn't include leather shifter or e-brake boots. Finally, it doesn't do anything about the hard plastic instrument cluster button pods. Even with 4LT, some DSV upgrades will still be in order.

And what is the savings with a 3LT? At least 4LT has a padded console, padded knee areas and a leather dash (which most vendors won't go near due to liability concerns. To "finish the job" on a 4LT you are probably looking at around $700. To do the same on a 3LT you are looking at thousands if you find someone that will mess around with the dash, if not the GM dash is about $1700 or so if you want to swap it out.
I haven't heard of anyone yet saying they wish they had 3LT instead of 4LT, but a lot of vise-versa comments.

4LT + DSV bits is better than 3LT + DSV bits IMHO.

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that a person shouldn't go with 4LT. My only point was that even with 4LT (of which I'm a fan), a few additional parts are necessary to "complete the job" IMO.

I agree with you, but the fact is GM went cheap on a lot of things on the Corvette (radio, NAV unit, quality of seat coverings), all except the things that matter on a sports car such as powertrain, suspension, brakes (although I wish they have Brembos like the Camaro does).
The only difference is a leather interior. If having a snappy interior is important to you, go for the 4LT as it would cost you as much or more to improve the interior yourself.
If not, the 3LT has everything the 4LT has. Save the money for something else.
That was exactly my rationale when placing my order. I can make a lot of mods with the $3500 difference in price.
I had the 3LT on my 2006, and my current 2008 coupes, decided to go all out on my 2010 GS vert and order the 4LT dark titanium/ebony option. If possible, see a 4LT interior in person as a comparison to the 3LT before you make the decision.
I did exACtly as you recommend and after looking at both I am the proud owner of an '08 4LT coupe!!! AO, black/sienna interior!!!

I never understood how you can justify paying premium for vette interior. It has to be the most jacked up, half-az'd effort I've ever seen. I tell every dealer I talk who tries to throw options at me, "ehh, I'm not buying the car for the interior...if I wanted that, I'd buy an Audi...vette interior sucks" they usually just stare at me with zero expression
I have the all ebony 3LZ package (same as 4LT) in my 2009 Z06. MSRP difference was $3,500 (not $4,000). I paid $2,800 (GMS price upgrade from 2LZ). It was a no-brainer in my opinion.

That's why there's a base model
and opinions are like a-holes, everybodys got one. However I don't agree with yours.
I looked at the 4LT before ordering my 3LT. I liked it, but I wanted red seating which isn't offered with the 4LT. I also really didn't want to spend that much money for the interior upgrades.
If you like the colors, and can spend the extra bucks, the 4LT is a really nice upgrade. For me though, it just wasn't worth the extra cost and I'm very happy with the 3LT.
I'll have to agree with an earlier poster in that, either way, the interior on my $35,000 Audi A4 is superior with better fit, finish, and material quality. It's not a major issue since these cars fulfill totally different missions in life, but it is a fact.

I don't know where everyone is getting their prices, but it only cost me a little over $2k to upgrade to the 4LT, not close to $4K some people are speaking of. I mean, are most people paying MSRP for everything on this car?
