Should the DIC tell you what gear you are in while using the paddle shifter? I can only tell what gear I am in if I use the HUD. I was told I should be able tell by using either one.

I believe it's HUD only. I just used the paddle shift on mine on Sunday but I can't recall if it was on the DIC (I don't think so), but I do know it was on the HUD.
Our 2006 A6 never showed the paddle-selected gear in the DIC.
Our newer 2009 A6 will show the paddle-selected gear in the DIC every time that I've looked. Pushing the "gauges" button will sometime replace the DIC gear with the appropriate gauge reading, sometimes not. I haven't figured that out yet.
Neither car will display the gear in HUD or DIC unless you have selcted a gear with the paddles.
My 2008 shows the gear on the DIC in sport mode, I don't have the HUD on mine, like others said if you hit a guage selection it will replace the gear readout, if that happens, hit reset and you go right back to the gear readout.
On my 2009 with NAV, the only time the gears show up in the DIC is when I am using the paddles and the HUD is giving me dircetions. Personlly I think it shoul always be on the HUD regardless if you are using the paddles or not.

If you have HUD you will only see it there on the HUD
