Default How to remove the windshield outer trim?

Talking specifically about the rather large black plastic pieces that go down the windshield on the sides from top to bottom of the windshield. Do these things pop out somehow? According to the GM nomenclature, they are called windshield applique...

I believe if you search in the Tech forum you'll find pics of how these come out. There's about 3 - 5 or so torx screws that hold them in. theres one down by the Hinge (A) pillar then the rest are under the rubber molding running up the windshield frame. The rubber is held in with plastic clip/pins. If you have a forked flat screwdriver or molding tool you can get the clips/pins out without breaking them.

Thanks for the reply and I actually did the search before posting my q but did not find anything relevant... The only thing I could find was referring to the interior trim. I am seriously considering just buying a new piece and do some backengineering not to break anything. There is a plastic piece of trim at the base of the long piece that looks like it may have to be removed as well before pulling out these pieces? I hate to think I am going to break anything.

Try this but don't let it scare you, it's really not that bad. I don't recall the rivets though. It's been a year or so since I removed mine.

my browser at work has filters on it and I can see only one pic in there From reading that thread, I assume you painted your trim? This is exactly what I want to do except I want to paint mine yellow I was considering painting on the car but the rubber seals on both edges make the outcome highly questionable. Thus, I want to pull these pieces off, and paint them off the car. Are the seals/gaskets on both sides of the applique attached to it or is the one toward the center of the car attached to the windshield frame? I know the one on the outside is a separate piece (GM calls it retainer) but WTF? this piece is riveted on to the plastic trim? I hope this is not the case, yikes... Do you have a pic of these pieces off the car? I guess I should have bought a black car after all, LOL (I also have a black C5)

I've got either a right or left out in the garage from a recent C6 part out. I'll see and take a pic of it and get back with you.

Camera dead so I'll talk you through it.

The outer shell is pretty much the whole piece. There are 7 screws holding it and an inner piece that you don't have to mess with or pull the rivets.

Inside the door hinge area there is a screw at the bottom of the trim piece. Remove it. Pull the rubber gasket out of the track up to the removable top area. That'll expose the other 6 screws. Just unscrew and wiggle the top potion down and out. You'll be able to take the rubber trim off the main piece then paint with no interference.

this help is really greatly appreciated. I finally got to look at the pics in the other thread you referenced. I gotta be honest I am still confused, especially after seeing the pics, LOL. I see the torx screws through the channel/guide in the outer seal/retainer. If I understand this correctly, I can just pull that retainer piece out or do I have to dig out the screw with it still attached to the applique? Also, it seems that the inner seal is attached to the windshield which is good Sorry for being so retarded but I am trying pretty hard not to break anything.

Just start with the rubber gasket at the bottom of the sill area. This where the plastic fasteners are. Be careful. Once up the door the gasket is in a track. Just pull out up to the roof and lay over out of the way.

Remove the 7 screws and the outer portion you're after will come off. You don't have mess with the other peice or the rivets. Slow and easy, you'll be OK.
