Isn't the solid rear axle better for drag racing? More durable? Like the Mustang?

I saw on another thread the difference between an 05 and 06 rear diff and I just wonder what in the hell was GM thinking, those cheap bastages. Its like the 82-02 F-body rears, just cheap aholes.

Default Convert it to a Powerglide

If you are serious about bracket racing, just get the newest C6 you can afford. Then convert it to a Powerglide. In race trim the Powerglide has less internal drag, it is stronger than the 4L65E or the 6L80E, has a very fast releasing trans brake, and has much better converter selection than any other trans available. There is just no equal for strength or consistency.

Most faster bracket classes have a cut off around 11.99. You should consider a 2008 with the LS3 as it would be a better foundation when you start adding a cam, headers, forged pistons, and intake manifold.

You will also have to change the rear end gears as CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) has all new auto trans Corvettes coming with a nosebleed high 2.56 rear gear. The Z51 cars get a slightly lower gear, but it is still not even close to what you need. If you go with the Powerglide, start with at least a 4.10 rear gear. If you end up with e 4L65 or 6L80, then a 3.42 will do as the lower gears in the trans will make up for the taller difference for the 4.10 gears.

Then maybe I should just buy a C6 Z06 and put an auto in it.
I come from a bracket racing background and to me a powerglide is really just a drag tranny. I still want a car I can drive on the street and enjoy and a powerglide won't get it done. I had a high 10 sec 69 Camaro with a powerglide in it and it was street driven as well and the glide was a bore.
Were only talking 30hp between an LS2 and LS3, and for a coupe the 2008 vs an 05 or 06 or newer will set me back $10-15,000 more, money that could be spent on mods.
I wouldn't even consider a glide unless I was shooting for well into the 9's and a drag car only. I don't want to go faster than 10.00 and I want to keep the car street driven.

If you end up racing with a 6L80, start saving up for an aftermarket 4L65E as the six speed will be short lived.

A C6 Z06 certainly is a larger investment, but is also a lot more car. The LS7 would be the best basis for a drag engine.

There are several C6 Z06 cars that have been converted to an auto trans. The first few were 4L80 and these last ones are 6L80's. With a good converter is is faster and more consistent than the manual 6 speed. Again, if you are interested in this route, call RPM.
