Black box

What is the rectangular black box for that is located at the top of the windshield just to the right of the rear view mirror. I went through my entire manual and it did not comment on what it is/does?

Different models have them located in different places.

I have a 2006 Sierra w/On Star but it doesn't have an ugly old box like my 2009 Vette is graced with!! You'd think they could have found a better way to hide that box on the coupes ya know??

How much room is there inside the Sierra? How much room is there inside the C6 coupe when the targa top is off?
