Police pulled me over for no front plate yesterday, in rush hour traffic. I told him, "oh man, just detailed the car and forgot to flip it up".
"What do you mean he asked"? I waled to the front and showed him the front retraclable plate, flipped it up and walked back to the door. He was still standing at the front examining it, then said, "that's cool, where did you get it and how much"?
He let me off and told me, "your silver car is very shiny, everyone turns their head to look at it including police officers, remember that".
Nice guy, thank goodness I had time to put the car in "stealth mode", (M2W), and he never noticed the clear side markers, although the bulbs are the right colour and they are on all the time.

lucked out.. When I lived in TX, I never mounted my
front plate.. but I carried it under the passenger floor mat.. Got pulled over for it once.. told the LEO that I was missing the mounting hardware and would get it installed ASAP.. he let me go.. went many years with no front plate and no tickets..

I got pulled over for that a few weeks ago as well. I only received a warning but what a pita. The officer was nice enough but damn. And I still have not heard ONE good reason for requiring a front plate.
I drove a Trans Am for 15 years with no front plates and never got pulled over.
I got pulled over the first day I bought the Corvette on the way home from the dealer for no front plate.
I believe police single out Corvette's and pull them over and hassle them about front license plates. Look around next time you drive and see how many other vehicles don't have front plates. Around here, nearly 25% of vehicles have no front plates. Everything from pickups to minivans. I have a hard time believing police are pulling them over like they do Corvette owners. I believe the law is not applied in a uniform manner, and Corvettes have just become high profile vehicles that LEO like to target to hassle about this.

Reason I have heard for requiring front plates (and why a lot of police departments are really enforcing it now) is the expensive plate scanners they now have. Front plates let 'em hit you coming or going.
Texas DPS troopers have been on a crusade to issue citations (no more warning tickets!!) for front plate violations for the past couple of years now. Local LEO agencies also appear to have become more aggressive in issuing such citations and particularly if you were stopped for another reason.

I was rear ended this past weekend on my motorcycle. The driver in the car behind me that hit me wasn't even old enough to drive and had no license. The driver that hit her had no insurance. This is in Texas, where there is a law on the books that is supposed to require vehicles to be impounded when drivers in them are in an accident and don't have insurance. Ha, it's a big joke. Both drivers and cars were let go. Neither of the vehicles were impounded. One of them didn't even have proper registration, or proof that the vehicle wasn't stolen. The other vehicles owner didn't even give permission for the vehicle to be used, and the driver of it wasn't covered under his insurance since they didn't even have a license. I'm told it is "at the officers discretion" whether they want to impound the vehicles or not. Their rights are more important than mine so they are allowed to keep driving and go out and cause yet more accidents and not have insurance to pay for it.
So who are the police protecting these days, that is what I want to know. It certainly isn't me. They would rather hassle folks for not having a front license plate than get folks off the road who aren't even supposed to be there in the first place. The whole system is upside down. Protect the criminal and hassle the general public for minor infractions.

To further your point, you might remember a couple of years ago someone torched the Texas Governor's Mansion in Austin one night. You guessed it. Texas DPS is responsible for security of the property. Some of the security cameras were not functioning plus DPS claimed not to have enough personnel on the grounds to properly guard the Mansion. Millions of dollars in fire/smoke damage to this historic house. Yet they have enough troopers to write no front plate violations only citations. Morons!!!

CHP in the Republik of Kalifornia always cite making it a fix it ticket and you have to pay a fine along with getting it corrected. No warnings given. Just pay $$$$ for fines that keep going up. Watch out for your tinted windows too here. A privildge to drive on the worse roads by the The revenue collectors of the freeways.
I sure wish we could vote on their jobs and salaries by their work performance or lack of.

Perhaps but I STILL have not heard one GOOD reason for requiring a front plate.

Of course not. You don't know the answer to that question by NOW? Cops are interested in protecting....cops. They BECOME cops, so that they can break the law and get away with it. It's F'n ridiculous.
I know that I have never recieved help from a cop, when I needed it....yet have been unduly harrased over nothing. It IS upside down.
To the OP glad that you were lucky. I always run a front plate because I don't want to give them any reason for pulling me over - they're forever running my plates through their computer as it is. It seems that Corvettes are singled out by the police all the time, even I have heard about people getting hassled about their tint whereas I see people in plain Jane cars running the darkest tint ever and doubt they can see $hit through them.
Hell I have seen people driving with paper fastened on the driver's window so they don't get exposed to the Sun!!!
Peter at Top Flight Reproductions sells them I believe....
as for the topic....
I dunno why people keep complaining about the law HERE....complain to your state reps and get the law changed until then put on the plate or suck up the fine...
I dunno about any place else but here in Florida the deputy/officer can add a note to your file so when they run your tag it will pop up and say "Johnny Lawbreaker was given a warning on 4/14/10 about a front plate" so the next time they stop you they may ask you if you received a warning before....if so I would make sure you answer truthfully or you won't be getting a warning. Just a heads up
