Default Navigation Question

I just purchased a used factory navigation unit for my 08 vert. I haven't installed it yet but I need to know if Onstar has to be activated for the nav to work? or is it a matter of purchasing Update DVD's?

No OnStar is a completely seperate system than the nav and does not have to be activated. Vettes can come with nav and not onstar just an FYI. You dont even need to purchase updated nav DVD's unless you want the most up to date maps otherwise it will work just fine with the original nav DVD it came with when new. I did hear thaty you will have to go to the dealership for them to "activate" the nav radio with their computers for it to work in your car.

Exactly correct. You do not need Onstar. If you have a 3LT car the install will be plug and play. Any Corvette navigation data disc will work with the unit. The newest disc will have whatever the latest updates are for streets and points of interest. Once installed you will need to take the car to a dealership so that it can be activated. The nav head unit has to be matched to the VIN of the car it is installed in or it will not operate and only the Tech II programmer can do that. It is only a few minute procedure by a competent dealer tech.

Also the XM radio tuner came with the unit I purchased. Should I install that tuner in my car or leave the original unit in there. By the way where is the XM tuner located in the vehicle? Is it next to the head unit?

No need to swap in the XM tuner if you have one all ready. Actually, no need even if you didn't.

If you have a coupe, the XM tuner is above the driver's side wheel well in the rear hatch area. Just pull back the carpet above the wheel and below the lip of the hatch opening and you will find it.

If you have a convertible, the XM tuner is located in the waterfall area (painted part between the seats behind the center console). You can get at it by removing the two screws that hold the waterfall on.

Thank you for the info!!!! It was a big help. Would this be the time to install a PAL while the dash is apart?

You can actually purchase a kit from forum member kawal (Ray) that does not require the dash to be apart if you have XM. He has a wire harness outfitted to work from the XM receiver that is also a plug and play. There is a thread on the forum about version 2.0 pals and the details are in there. Ray has been working with Mediatronics (the company that manufactures the PAL for GM and is really the forum expert on the PAL. Very easy install with the new harness.
