Default Trouble Starting

Hello!!! New to the boards and I have a question. I have a 2005 Corvette with the push button ignition. The manual states that the car has to be in reverse when you turn it off and before you start the car or it will not start. I thought that I was doing this, but I could not get the car to turn over. I finally had to disconnect the battery, wait about 15 minutes, re-connect the battery and it finally started. What am I doing wrong? Is there anything you can buy to override this feature so that I won't have to unplug my battery every time? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I think you've misunderstood the procedure. The car has to be in reverse in order for the computers to shut down completely. If it is not in reverse, it will ask you to "shift to reverse" on the DIC. And if you don't, you will most likely drain the battery, therefore, the car will not start the next time you get in to go for a drive.

As far as starting the car, it doesn't matter what position the shifter is in as long as you have the clutch pedal depressed.

I think you might need to replace your battery. Sounds to me like there is not enough charge to start the car. Others may chime in with other suggestions. My response was mostly to inform you of the correct reason for the shift to reverse feature in the 05's.

For an 05, I always suspect the steering column lock, since I had so much trouble and $ paid to fix it.
Here is the last thread about it. You can refer to the embedded links within this thread that refers back to older threads.

I was going to suspect you did not shut down the car properly and battery was dead since you are confused about the reverse procedure.
But since you got it to start after disconnecting battery, I assume you shut it down correctly, so it's not the battery...

The funny thing is that it doesn't happen all of the time. I place the car in reverse before I shut it down like always, and my chances are 50/50...

On my '06 coupe it is very important that the clutch be FULLY depressed in order for the starter to become engaged. The clutch must be ALL the way to the floor or it will not crank. Best of luck finding your particular starting issue.

How old is your battery, If it's OEM then you are over do for a replacement. It's just a matter of time... Replacing now will save you alot of headache.

It's probably time to replace the car battery.

fellow 05 with manual transmission here . . . time to go get a new battery. Then as stated above, not a hard thing to get used to, always turn the car off in reverse and leave it there with the brake on. Then all will be well with the world.

But do you get a message on the DIC? I'd think that the clutch switch could be adjusted so that it doesn't have to be stuffed to the floor. Mine doesn't (I think!).

I looked at the clutch switch recently and its made so that the clutch really does have to be pushed all the way to the floor in order to engage it, and it doesn't appear to be adjustable. If you still have the original battery in the car, then that is definitely my bet
