Radar got me
It's easy to find yourself going 10-12 mph over downhill even when you are going about at a leisurely pace for mpg's. Of course that's where the speed traps are because the man knows his stretch of highway better than most.
I often don't use it in town, but it absolutely helps to remind you on the highway. some may have a dim view of radar detectors, but I would counter that they make you drive more cautiously once you start getting into actively patrolled areas. Either way you slow down a bit..one way just costs more.
The tickets in my lifetime have been:
- 4 over (long story, officer was wrong about the speed limit, proved it in court)
- 9 over (officer couldn't do math in his head, thought I was 19 over, until he wrote it down), going downhill no less
- 15 over (that was 100% me, no cruise in my Jeep Patriot just recently, was not paying attention).
I do maybe 5-7mph over on 65-70mph highways. Just got a Passport 9500ix for my birthday. Nice, gentle reminder.
The only thing I've been guilty of is, after 10 minutes of non-sense with people in the left lane going 15 under the speed limit, passing on the right, typically twice, to get past the situation. On the Florida Turnpike in March, I couldn't believe how many people were in the left lane doing under 55mph in a 70mph, and gunned it passed a good 15 car caravan to get out of that mess.

Wait long enough, and you'll always find a decoy to follow.
