Used a Meguiars clay bar on my black 07 Z over the weekend.
I was pleased at how easy it was to use, and the results were pretty amazing. the "feel" and sound of the finish before and after using the clay was most telling. Before - felt OK, but lightly brushing my hand accross the finished made a light scratchy sound. Afterwards, it felt like glass, and made no sound when passing a hand over the area. When finished (45min?) I waxed 'er up. Looks like a million bucks!
Yes, clay to Clear Coat is what low speed buffing was to lacquer paint years ago, without the worry of damage.
I certainly don't miss buffing and waxing my non clear coat cars. Back then you could tell a job well done by a good shine and the generous amount of paint you saw on your rags
BE CAREFUL that your claybar doesn't pick up any gook of any kind. If it does, you'll end up scratching the finish of the car, while you're rubbing it. So, keep checking it.
Clay bar is an old body shop trick that has been around for years. The way that you can tell is you need to clay is to put your hand in a thin plastic bag and run it across the top of a horizontal surface, like a fender or hood. If it feels rough or gritty like sandpaper it is time to clay. Remember, wash, clay, polish, seal and then wax.
