Finally Stopped The Clunking

Finally Stopped The Clunking
I've heard clunking coming from under my 06 LT3 ever since I bought it last summer.
After much forum research on this subject, I first checked & tightened the half axle nuts. I did not notice any improvement. next I changed out the sway bar end links. Some improvement was noticed but clunking still obvious. I then changed the differential gear lube to the latest GM recommended gear lube. This stopped the chatter upon acceleration but I still had clunking sounds emitting from under the vehicle. Yesterday, I lubricated the axle half shaft splines. ALL CLUNKING HAS NOW CEASED.
Just thought I would share this with all of you that may be hearing clunking sounds coming from under your C6. I would recommended starting by lubricating the half shaft splines. It's quick, easy, inexpensive and very effective. At least it was in my case.

Burning Brakes
Take off the axle nuts using a 34mm inch deep socket. Push in the half-axle. Get some grease in there. Might need a bent Q-Tip with axle grease on it to do the job.
When I did my car, I also discovered that the axle nuts were loose -- only about 1-foot pound of torque was needed to take them off!

My clunking was at low speeds when making sharp turns and during throttle variations.
Just remove the rear wheel and the 34mm axle nut then spray silicone into the axle spline, follow by packing wheel bearing grease into the axle spline. You may need to use a cotton swab or a small screw driver to get the grease in there.
Hope this helps!

You do know that you should never re-tighten the axle nut, it's used once and if it becomes loose, you need to replace it! I had mine done at the dealer because they were loose, and the car had 300 miles on it.
"...The spindle nuts are not intended to be re-torqued because they have a concave surface on the bottom that flattens at torque to mate intimately with the face. This is intended to really be a one shot deal..."
