Light above sun visor
Last night as I was drinving home I hit a bump and the passenger side sun visor popped loose. I noticed a small amber colored light near the point that the visor latches. I got out my manual but cannot find anything about what this is. So if anyone has an idea as to what this light is please let me know. It is only on the passenger side of the car.
Welcome to the club. Yep, I asked the same question about 10 months ago. Call it what you want. Mood lighting whatever. If you search the forum you will see others have asked the question too. I don't remember the exact answer why. How much light can it add & why?
I don't have it, but I think I remember reading it was to light up the center console a bit at night so you could find the shifter or something. My old '92 Camaro had something similar in it's rear view mirror.

It's officially referred to as "ambient light" and it's purpose is to give a little light to the cabin so that it is not totally dark.

Light above sun visor
An ambient light is located in the passenger sun visor
clip. This light stays on while driving to keep the
cabin from being too dark.

Elmer is correct, the purpose of an ambient light is to slightly illuminate the cabin in order to make it easier to read the backlighted gauges at night. It reduces the dynamic range of light so your eyes don't have to adjust as much.
Wow it still amazes me at how many people dont know about these interior ambient lights. A big majority of newer cars have these and they now come in all sorts of colors. Infact, my 07 Acura TL-S has two red ones aiming down from the roof and also has one in each foot well. Looks absolutely amazing at night and they are 100% stock.
P.S And just an FYI they discontinued these lights starting with the 08 model year C6. Funny how Chevy is removing little things for cost savings where as other manufacturers are adding these types of things.
Here are pics of the ambient interior lighting that comes factory in my TL-S. 100 times better than the almost un-noticeable one in the C6
Here are the overhead ones that aim down towards the center console

And here is the one mounted in the footwells

The under hood lamp had another reason for being deleted. It was being left on during transit from the plant and running the battery down.
So, like, the mercury switch or whatever was malfunctioning? The one on my '05 cuts off after something like 20 minutes with the hood up. A great benefit at car shows.

I recall during my C4 days un-plugging the underhood light at car shows to prevent the drain on the battery.

However, information about that light over the passenger side sun visor was not in the 2005 owner's manual. The person who created this thread has a 2005 C6.
