I've been driving for 46 years. I've owned one car or another for 42 years. Back in the early days, I carried every tool you needed to rebuild the car on the side of the highway.
As time marched on, cars got better. Carried tools for years, and never used them. As time marched on, cleaned out one old car for the new one, discarded more tools.
With the Corvette, I've replaced tools with cleaning supplies! I don't worry about breaking down. I worry about it looking good!
I carry my cell phone, a small compressor, a quart of oil, a screwdriver, a flashlight, Invisible Glass, Plexus, Quick Detailer and some microfiber towels.

I consider myself a pretty good back yard mechanic, but with these modern cars and their electronics, there is very little I can fix on the side of the road. Maybe a screwdriver, and a crescent wrench for the basics, but other than that, a cell phone, AAA, and a S&W 9mm!!
Blanket and NPP-in-a-box in one cubby. Common hand tools, rags, medical, compressor, bottle jack, and the all important 200MPH duct tape in the other. Cell phone, laptop, umbrella, camera, and the equally important cash/credit cards are all up front.
I've used most everything at one time or another, but only the phone and cash/credit for emergencies.
