Default Navigation nightmare or no problem?

I have an 08 w/3LT and recently purchased a navigation from another 08. Dealer installed and it seemed to work for a very short time(minutes) and then the am/fm was just static, and xm came in fine. The screen opened initially the first couple of times and then stopped, and only the passenger side speakers would play. Tech stated he spent quite a bit of time on it and consulted GM Tech and end result was that the unit had an internal short and useless.

So, the individual I get the unit from helps me out and gets another one via warranty as his car was under warranty. When I pick up this replacement unit by all accounts it appears to be a remanufactured unit from a company called modelelectronics.com. He tells me he gave them his vin and this unit is supposed to be for an 08, but here is my concern.

There is a green sticker that to me indicates a manufacture date of 02/22/05 and a GM part # of 15263014. All of which indicates to me that this is an 05 Nav. Before I go through another install, my question is will this work in my 08, steering wheel controls, etc. Can these be updated for an 08 model if this is originally an 05. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

I would think that a professional service organization could put any firmware that they want in the unit and therefore make it work...but I do not know for sure...you should post in the Audio section...they are very smart with audio there...they would know if the hardware is exactly the same or not. Keep in mind that they also could be using assorted parts, so a sticker on a part of the case may not be indicative of the electronics that are actually inside. They may take 5 defective radios and make three good ones out of them.

Thanks CClive, I've pm'ed Talon hoping he might be able to chime in. Off to the dealer to see what the tech says.

The 2005 - 2010 nav units are identical hardware. There was a TSB firmware update in 2006 that allowed the 2005/2006 units to play MP3 and corrected an radio static problem.

Even if the unit you got was a 2005, it should work with your 2008. Just make sure the firmware was updated for the MP3 and the static fix.
