Default Posi Slip?

Hi.

Bone stock 2008 A6, F55, 7300 miles

I have no issues with my ‘08 except the other day, for the second time, I noticed the following:

I was backed into a tight spot at friend’s condo garage for several hours. As I was leaving, I had to turn the wheel hard right, and at about 1 mph, I heard what I would call a slight whirring sound from what sounded like the diff. Not clutch chatter (as I understand it) or clunking, nor tire scrubbing. Just the lightest whirring (whining) sound, sort of like clutch plates slipping.

As I moved out through the garage, I had to do another hard right, also at the slowest possible forward speed. The same thing happened.

I then drove 150+ miles home with no issues at all. No problems since.

This is the second time this has occurred - the power train stone cold (70 degrees F), steering wheel turned to one extreme, and traveling forward at about 1 or 2 mph on a cement floor in a garage.

My C6 was born on May 16, 2008. I know there was a TSB issued re diff fluid in January 2008. I would assume mine has the new fluid. I have never heard what I call clutch chatter or any kind of clunking.

As a part of a regular maintenance, I plan to change the diff fluid this fall.

I have full warranty left, but the thought of going to a dealer scares me. I have not been able to simulate this problem with a warmed up vehicle, so I would have to leave the car at the dealer overnight.

Is this normal - maybe because the fluid is cold, or am I developing a problem?

Thanks,

M....

The car is built to go 200 mph like it is on rails. If you want handling tuned for 1 mph runs, I suggest you buy a golf cart.

I know with alot of cars cranking the steering wheel all the way to the stops will get a whine from the power steering pump, could that be what your hearing?

At that slow of a speed you won't hear that kind of noise from the diff. The clutch packs are designed to slip at slow speed to allow differential movement. It's working fine. Go out and do a burnout. If you see equal length lines from both wheels you're fine.

At slow speed and full lock turns, the front suspension setup and fat tires cause the front tires to actually skid rather than turn, and you can hear this happening. This is normal.

If it's truly from the rear, it's the posi complaining. The plates don't have enough lube between them. Take the car out and drive it in figure 8's for about 10 loops. Many times this will correct minor posi noise.
