Default NAV problem

I almost never use the NAV gizmo in my '06 Z06. The last time I was going to take a small trip, I stick the map CD in and all it would do is display a "Insert CD" message. I tried the old one as well as a newer one with the same result.

Any suggestions? Or should I just buy a Tom Tom or some othe $200-300 replacement and forget the $2000 POS? I have a $200 deductible GMPP extended warrenty.

I will venture a guess that the laser lens is dirty unless your disks are defective. With only a $200 deductible, I would suggest getting it fixed if you are ever planning on selling the car in the future otherwise its non-working condition will cost you more in loss of value. As for never using it, your choice of course but it is a powerful tool. Its not as easy as the after-market nav's but has more to offer as far as its capabilities (my personal opinion), once you use it regulary as needed. About the only thing its missing is "real-time" traffic updates which should have been an easy thing for them to add but didn't.

Default reply re NAV

Being a complete techno idiot, a dirty laser lenses doesn't sound that expensive to fix or is it? Since I doubt that both almost unused CDs are defective, I will ask the repair shop what to do when I visit with them this afternoon on another matter, the recall on the steering column problem.

Thanks for the hint!!

I'm guessing that it is more than just a dirty lense because the nav DVD (not CD) is accessed every time you start the car. That keeps the DVD cleaner than the CD that only runs when you play it. If you want to try cleaning it just eject the DVD and blow some canned air in there.

Sorry you feel the nav is a $2000 POS. Like dgrant, I would also get it fixed because I would take $4000 off your selling price if it didn't work. I was taught at the NCM how it works and I spent more time learning on my own and I would never want a Corvette that didn't have a functioning FACTORY nav. It has too many features the others don't. And, yes, I have a Garmin but I keep it in the glove compartment only in case the factory nav ever fails.

This may sound silly, but into which slot are you inserting the disc?

The navigation DVD is a DVD and goes in the lower slot. The upper slot is for playing music CDs. If the system really says something like 'Insert CD', it may be that it does not recognize the disc inserted in the upper slot as a CD (which would be the case if a DVD were inserted).

Like I said, this may be a silly question, but since you referred to the disc as a CD -- and reported a CD error message -- I figured it might just be the problem. I hope it really is that simple.

I thought that if you inserted the DVD into the CD slot, the radio would play a form of Rap but with a Latin beat with a voice that sounded like Tiny Tim.

On our 2006, sometimes after inserting the Nav DVD I would get the same message for a minute or two, then magically everything would start to work normally.

I would be sure the DVD is clean (wash very carefully w/ hand soap and dry carefully w/ cotton towel). After it's fully dry, insert it and wait a while. If it still doesn't work, try starting the car and wait a few minutes.
