Default Automatic Alarm Set Question

If the car has the auto alarm set feature turned on, I believe it is suppose to set the alarm when you walk away from the car. Does this feature work when both windows are down? The other night I had the windows down, walked away, and a person was able to open the door. Is this normal?

Thanks.

My understanding is that the alarm is armed whenever the car is locked.

If I'm right, then you would need to have the car set to auto-lock or you would have to push the lock button on your fob, to arm the alarm.

If you walk up to the car with the fob in your pocket, the alarm would automatically disarm at the same time the system unlocked your door when you squeeze the handle.

i think...

The windows being up/down don't matter. If you have the car set to auto-lock and someone was able to open it, is it possible that you 'set' this feature using a different fob that the one you had it happen with? I believe this is one of the driver personalization/customizable things.

BTW- it's not the first time I've heard of this happening.

The only auto alarm function the car has is tied to the locks. When you lock the car with the fob or when it automatically locks because you've got it programmed via the DIC, it should turn on the alarm when it locks.

Here's what my 2006 owner's manual says on page 2-20.

Arming the System
Use one of the three following items listed here to arm
the system:
• Press the lock button on the keyless access
transmitter.
• Open the door. Lock the door with the power door
lock switch. The security light should flash. Remove
the keyless access transmitter from inside the
vehicle and close the door. The security light will
stop flashing and stay on. After 30 seconds, the light
should turn off.
• The vehicle can be programmed to automatically
lock the doors and arm the theft-deterrent system
when you exit the vehicle. See DIC Vehicle
Personalization on page 3-68.
Now, if a door or the hatch/trunk is opened without the
keyless access transmitter, the alarm will go off. Your
horn will sound for two minutes, then it will go off to save
battery power. Your vehicle will not start without a keyless
access transmitter present.
The theft-deterrent system will not arm if you lock the
driver’s door with the power door lock switch after the
doors are closed.
If your passenger stays in the vehicle when you leave
with the keyless access transmitter, have the passenger
lock the vehicle after the doors are closed. This way the
alarm will not arm, and your passenger will not set it off.

Testing the Alarm
Do the following to test the system:
1. Make sure the trunk lid/hatch is latched.
2. Lower the window on the driver’s door.
3. Manually arm the system.
4. Close the doors and wait 30 seconds.
5. Reach through the open window and manually pull
the release lever on the floor.
6. Turn off the alarm by pressing the unlock button on
the transmitter.
If the alarm is inoperative, check to see if the horn works.
If not, check the horn fuse. See Fuses and Circuit
Breakers on page 5-93. If the horn works, but the
alarm doesn’t go off, see your dealer.
Disarming the System
Always use your keyless access transmitter to unlock
a door either by pressing the unlock button on the
transmitter or by squeezing the door handle sensor while
you have the transmitter with you. Unlocking a door any
other way will set off the alarm. If your alarm sounds,
press the unlock button on the keyless access transmitter
to disarm it.

And no matter what, if the window is down and someone reaches in, they can use the manual door release on the floor to open the door. If the door is locked when they do this, the alarm will sound....if the door is not locked, then it won't sound. This same thing applies to the trunk. If locked, then the alarm will sound when you use the metal key to open it, if the car is not locked, then the alarm will not sound when it is opened with the key.
