i accidentally posted this in the parts section. I bought a used nav unit for my car and i must say I am glad that i went with the oem unit. I know people bash these units all the time and I know that you can get a lot more features in aftermarket units that look better, but the unit being compatible with my hud made it worth it.
Many bash the unit simply because they do not read the manual. I know as I was guilty of the same. However, once I read the manual I was shocked at how capable it is along with the fact no unit looks as good installed period.
Then there are the people like me who cannot live with the stock Bose and Nav sound system that sucks for me since I'm used to aftermarket systems that are cheaper and blow the Bose system out of the water sound wise. I will be installing the Kenwood DNX 9960 this weekend and it was almost $900 cheaper than the Bose with nav and a 6 disc changer listed for. The complete Bose system will be up for sale soon so keep an eye out if anyone needs one.

When you get close to a turn, the information shows on the HUD. So if you don't know where you are going, you can keep your eyes on the road and get the info too. Works awesome! IMO.
I think the only reason to go with the stock unit is the HUD integration. I bitch about it and not because of user error. The screen looks like crap compared to even the cheapest aftermarket nav system and it's missing tons of features that new aftermarket NAV systems have. I know it came out in 2005 but if they're going to charge $1500 for it it should be updated every couple years. I'll stick with it though just because of the HUD info, to me that's worth it but if an aftermarket company came out with one that worked with the HUD I think a LOT of vette drivers would be swapping out theirs.
i love the stock nav... while its not as high res as some of the aftermarket units, imo it works much better. i dont give 2 ***** about the res, just get me where i need to go. this unit is very fast and still updatable with dvd updates..
I'm a hater. I hate my OEM nav system. Why??? Three reasons:
1) Extremely poor graphics. The screen image on the OEM system is like looking at stick figures when the aftermarket offers much better detail - like showing a 4 way lane merge with roadsigns and an arrow showing which one to take when the OEM system shows a single line for each road with a small arrow indicating the route. With better graphics (like with the navs in my DD and in my wife's car) I understand the route better and actually have to look at the map less!
2) Non-intuitive operating system. As some posters stated, the OEM system works great
after reading the manual. With better programmed software (more intuitive) the system is more simple to operate and less time with the manual is needed. With the Tom Tom in my DD, I figured it out without much reference to the manual. I still find it difficult to control my vert's nav.
3) Cost. Just knowing that better systems are available for less cost pizzes me off!
Well, I'm just going to live with it for now, and be thankful when I get an opportunity like this to vent.

Also the DVD that accompanies the manual is a decent tutorial tool.
