I do the following every time I wash the car and it works great to clean the wheel barrels. Note I have gumby wheels () which make it easier because of the room between the spokes.
I use the standard wash mitt to wash the car. To do the wheel barrels I insert a wooden 5 gallon paint stirring stick (they will give you one at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) into the mitt. Load the mitt up with your soapy wash water first. Then scrub the inside of the barrell using the mitt on the stick. It even fits between the brake caliper and barrel.
I bought a brush used for cleaning under refrigerators at Home Depot. It works great. It also has a wooden handle. A lot cheaper than ordering some special tool that accomplishes the same thing.

And I thought I was the only one using the paint stirring stick.

I have an 07. What I do is use a different mitt. Not the same one I use on the car. I get my hand in there and clean what I can. I then back the car up about six inches and that exposes the area that was under the caliper. I then wash that small part.
I also picked up what I think they call a wine bottle cleaner. It's small in diameter and very flexible about 12" long covered in a sponge like material that really holds soap and fits under the caliper. If I don't feel like moving the car I use that.
I know it's a PITA but mine is not a DD. So it never really gets that dirty in there.
