I have 2006 base coupe with stock mufllers. When I push up and down on the left muffler tips, there is a metallic banging sound. For the life of me, I can't see anything hitting. Everything is tight, all connections are in place. Every time I begin to move the car, I get a clank from that area, and again if I let up on the gas. sometime I get the clank for no obvious reason, probably a chasis change of some kind. Anyone experience this? any idea where its coming from. It is definately the muffler somehow. It is not the famous differential noise. thanks.
There is a hanger that goes up behind the rear fascia, I think it is a 10mm bolt that goes through a metal hanger. When it works loose it has that metal clanging. You will need to lay on your back and look up directly above the tips behind the rear bumper (fascia)
thanks for the reply. I'm not sure I see what you're talking about. Each muffler has a hanger welded to each side of the muffler at the back. Each hanger hooks into a rubber throuhg a hole in the rubber. Are talking about the bolt that holds the rubber on?
yes, if you lay on your back and look up, the two prongs from the muffler that hold it up at the rear. My bolt was loose and was making the clanging sound you mentioned. If you lay under and move each one see if that is where the noise is coming from.
Also look to the middle spring hangers in the tunnel area. 2 metal springs that have metal to metal contact at both ends. these guys made noise on our 08 coupe until I "corrected" the problem with stainless steel tie wraps, and added the necessary tension to them. Sounded like a tin can when releasing the clutch on slow starts.
Its getting ready to rain. I'll put up on the lift tomorrow and see if either of these ideas work. Sounds like they're on the right track. Anxious to try it. Lousy rain. We've had 13" in 8 days .
Neither of these ideas worked. It is really strange. I move the left muffler left and when I move it back right I get a rather lous metal bang. But nothing is hitting, nothing is loose. It almost sounds like it is coming from inside the right muffler, but that doesn't make any sense either. Any more ideas?

I had this problem after I had a round of mods done a couple of years ago and like to never found it but there is was. When they connected the exhaust the drivers side spring was twisted and loose.
I'm just going to add some pics to show what everyone is talking about:
These are the springs at the midpipe, make sure they are still connected:
These are the hangers at the back of the muffler. Make sure the bolts are tight and that the muffler nubs are actually in the hangers.
Since you have stock mufflers it would be kind of strange for the 'over the axle' pipe to be hitting anything because it's 1 piece (unlike the one shown) but maybe a combination of a loose muffler clamp and loose hanger could cause it to shift...unlikely but....
make sure you have clearance in there:

I had the same issue, did the same thing and it fixed the problem. I was told the new B&B exhaust that I added didnt have the same weight as the stock set, so the springs werre not pulled tight and rattled. Mine sounded like a set of keys rattling.
Had the exact same popping sound from the passenger rear muffler - nothing hitting, not a rattle sound but a popping when you physically move the muffler. I know it doesn't make sense but I put WD-40 over the muffler hangers and rubber connections and can no longer duplicate the popping sound.

I've got the same thing. Sounds like rattling keys around 2,800 RPM. Very annoying. I'm not clear on the stainless steel zip ties. What part is being tensioned?
