My C6 has been bulletproof so far with 20K. Just got new tires that are very quite so of course I will be able to hear new things from the Vette.
I have a very slight whine from what sounds like the diff on deceleration in the higher gears. I have heard this in other cars also.
Any thoughts on this, is it normal? Do you have it in your Vette.
The rear diffs on Corvettes have a critical clearance issue between the ring and pinion and if they are off at all, are famous for whining -- especially on deceleration.
Perhaps with the old tires you did not hear it and if you can turn up the radio to erase it now, its probably not a problem. If it is louder than that, it might need some attention --- which is NOT cheap. You have to drop the entire back end of the car, suspension and all to R and R it......almost a full day's labor = $$'s....

I'm not familar with the critical clearance issue for noise except when not enough, but not surprised because there are spacer washers for clearance and expansion, but the machining of the gear tooth bevel could also be critical.
Every time I put new tires on any car I had in the past, the tire noise was louder initially. New treads on tires make more noise than ones which are worn. Im a little surprised you say its quieter than the older tires?
These new tire tread sounds can be confused with rear end noise. Just a thought.

I had Diff fluid change @ 5 K.
A6 trans.
Thnx
I have an 08 (32k miles) with a slight decel whine 74-67 mph in 4th, 5th and 6th gears. If I put it in neutral, press in the clutch or apply the gas it will go away. This has occurred since new. The service techs have driven and documented the whine. The rear differential fluid has been changed twice, whine is still there. We suspect the back lash setting on the ring and pinion gear is off slightly from the factory. My concern is the irregular wear on the ring and pinion gears and the affect on longevity. I plan on returning soon and push for a new differential. I still have about 2 1/2 yrs. left on the power-train warranty.

Tell me about it, my differential (C6) is in the shop at this moment and is being replaced under extended warranty.

Good input for sure: The newness and the brand of tire that I have just happens to have much less noise than the OEM's. Granted the tread blocks are howling on certain roads. The thing is with the dif though when I accelerate it goes away. So its definitely drive train stuff in the rear.

Hey Mike, Thnx for your post. I am thinking along those lines also.
I think I should have it listened to at the dealer ( I have GMPP until 2013) Would you be so bold as to tell me where you are in Northern Cal? This seems like a issue where GM or a dealer could really play dumb.

I live in Marin county and went to Novato Chevrolet. Have a service tech drive it on a smooth highway, loud road grain on decel can mask the whine. Get the whine documented, it will help build your claim. Good luck!

I've built a few diff's, and whine on decel usually mean's bad ring/pinion clearance or a broken ring gear tooth. You can probably live with it, but I'd have it looked at.
I understand, no offense, glad that other options can also cause problems and are being recoginized. Sometimes other problems are being overlooked and I'm glad that you are expanding this thought of reasoning!
