I see a lot of the 05-06 nav units going for fairly affordable prices these days.
I have a 2006 3LT with Bose and Onstar w/ the 6 disc in dash player so i know from an installation standpoint it is plug and play.
I did some reading on the different units and I know 06+ can be used without a problem. Seeing as I don't have the steering wheels controls from what I can see i can use a 2005 unit without a problem also.
The only thing I found was that the 05 may need a firmware upgrade which I actually already found on this site and downloaded. It claims to fix these problems:
• Modify the signal interface with the ARS module to correct the reception condition.
• Add an on-screen message to remind the customer that a destination is required before a route can be planned.
• Add MP3 functionality.
Did I miss anything else with the 2005 unit I should be aware of?

The only thing I would ask is if you accounted for the missing navigation antenna that you will need to add as well. I suspect you did as you have done your research and all of your conclusions are correct. The 2005 unit will work fine in your car. It will effectively be plug and play on the swap. You will need to have the anti-theft deactivated by a dealer with a Tech II. This will introduce your VIN to the new radio and you will be good to go.
On the firmware, try to play a couple of mp3 cd's in the radio before attempting to apply the firmware update. If they play, it has the updated firmware all ready. If they don't play or are not recognized it may not.
I priced out the antenna. $50 shipped through parts taxi or $53 from parts warehouse.
I thought the same thing about the nav. I could make an mp3 cd. Honestly since i don't listen to mp3 cd's i don't know if i would even do the firmware update unless i was experiencing any of the signal problems stated above.
I should be able to make a few phone calls to some ppl at the local chevy/gmc dealers we know around here and get it unlocked for free. I saw some others paid $40 or so.
do all 06 's play mp3's or do they also need an upgrade
Unless its a really early 2006 where the unit was made in 2005 it should play them.
Question though? The upgrade only pertains to playing MP3 CD's. Who makes MP3 CD's anymore anyway with Ipods and Satellite radio. Also, an MP3 CD is different than an Audio Disc. I think when most people create cd's they think they are creating MP3 cd's which is not the case even if your files are in MP3 format. Most people create audio discs.
