I've got a really weird problem, first my AC stopped working, the fan blows but the compressor isn't coming on because the air is warm. In addition the car is over heating, sitting for even a short time causes it to warm up quite a bit. I observed the coolant going from 214 to 232 after just a couple minutes.
Both these problems started within minutes of each other, does anyone have a suggestion as to what could cause that?
Probably not. That's the way it is on my Olds. The fan went out and the air didn't work on my daily driver. Someone else with more experience can say for sure, but that's the first place I would start.

Actually I checked and I don't think the fans are coming on but the fuse isn't blown. The service manual mentions a relay but I can't locate it. Do you have any idea where it might be?
A check of my owners manual shows fuse #25 under the hood as controling the fan. I have an 07. As far as the location of a relay, someone with more experience will have to chime in. Good luck.
The a/c compressor micro-relay is at location 35 in the engine-compartment fuse block. I don't see a relay for the cooling fan, only the fuse at location 25.
I just now took a quick look under the hood of my 09... maybe the electrical connector to your fan came loose. It's pretty tight in there and I didn't see a connector. But I know there must be one somewhere.
To make sure we're on the same page, here's the fuse block I'm referring to:
Above is a thread about melted out connections where the fan plugs into the relay under the car, on the fan shroud. Some pictures are included.
Also your ac will shut down if the car gets too hot. High temps increase the pressure in the ac system and it is a safety to prevent damage to the compressor.
Don't forget to check for physical obstructions with junk sucked up against your radiator. A plastic bag sucked up there will overheat the car.
When you get it fixed, I'd like to know if I made the right call.
Yea it was the fan. It has subsequently started working again all on its own. The dealership stated that the computer had registered code P0408 which is either a defective motor or a defective Fan Control Module. They said it would be $460 for the module or $690 for the motor but they have no way of knowing which is actually the problem.
I called up GM parts house and they hooked me up with an FCM for only $156. I'm going to try that first if the problem persists then I'll go for the motor itself. Even if I have to swap both parts myself it will still be cheaper than having the dealership install just the FCM.

The saga continues... The car is still overheating even after I replaced the FCM. So I'm going to go looking for melted connectors instead. Thanks for the info
