So today this morning my 2005 manual NON TELESCOPING would not start. I always lock the steering wheel when I get out it's been a habit of mine from other cars. The battery is fine all lights and such light up. When I tried to start it the start button would do all the functions correctly EXCEPT crank the motor. I started to think dammit I just replaced the battery and starter. Which was my first thought the starter went bad. I also made sure the clutch pedal was all the way down which I read threads on. I also noticed my steering wheel was NOT locked and I could turn my wheels but not matter how far left of right I could turn my wheels the steering wheel would not lock.
I then came across a thread which had similar problems everything worked except cranking the engine. A few members also experimented with disconnecting the battery for about 15mins and I tried that and it fired right up. Anyone have any ideas what went wrong and why disconnecting the battery worked to start my car up or if this is a symptom of a problem down the line which can be costly?
by a mechanic it is like having to reboot your home computer from time to time. I don't know if it's true, but he said that is exactly what we're doing when we disconnect the battery after experiencing this malfunction.
since it's an 05, i will say it's the steering column lock
sometimes the steering was not locked and car still would not start. you can do a search on column lock and find enough to read up on before going to dealer, since dealer will have difficulty diagnosing it.

I thought that only applies to telescoping steering wheels only or am I wrong on this. So what you are saying or I am understanding is IF the steering wheel is NOT locked this can cause a malfunction?

I read a thread where a member had to do this everytime which I would say is both unacceptable and embarrasing. I really hope I don't get stranded somewhere because of this. I already have had my share of problems with this car.
you won't get stranded.
you can do the disconnect/reconnect battery method like others have posted.
or you can push start the car like i did many times.
just turn ignition on (it won't start obviously) and leave it on, then either have someone push your car or get it rolling down an incline, keep clutch pressed in with gear in first (many say second gear is less stress on car, but you would need more speed), once car is rolling, pop out the clutch and car will start up.
>>> of course, make sure it is clear and safe to do so (steering will be heavy as heck until car is rolling or is started), and be prepared to slow down or stop the car as soon as it starts and jerks forward.
probably not the best way to get the car started, but effective and more convenient than calling a tow truck.
good luck until you get the problem solved.
