Hey guys,
I'm taking delivery of a new 2010 GS conv., manual trans next week. Anything special I need to do or care I need to take early on? Is there any kind of break-in period?
thanks
Follow these recommended guidelines during the first
1,500 miles/2414 km of driving this vehicle. Parts have a
break-in period and performance will be better in the
long run.
For the first 200 miles/322 km:
• To break in new tires, drive at moderate speeds and
avoid hard cornering for the first 200 miles/322 km.
• New brake linings also need a break- in period. Avoid
making hard stops during the first 200 miles/322 km.
This is recommended every time brake linings are
replaced.
For the first 500 miles/805 km:
• Avoid full throttle starts and abrupt stops.
• Do not exceed 4,000 engine rpm.
• Avoid driving at any one constant speed, fast or
slow, including the use of cruise control.
• Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle
when the engine speed will exceed 4000 RPM.
• Do not let the engine labor. Never lug the engine
in high gear at low speeds. With a manual
transmission, shift to the next lower gear. This rule
applies at all times, not just during the break-in
period.
For the first 1,500 miles/2414 km:
• Do not participate in track events, sport driving
schools, or similar activities during the first
1,500 miles/2414 km.
• Check engine oil with every refueling and add if
necessary. Oil and fuel consumption may be higher
than normal during the first 1,500 miles/2414 km
I'm right in the middle of that break-in period with my 2010 GS coupe, the manual is pretty clear on all of it, I read mine pretty well, mostly because of the differences with the Dry Sump system, whick mine has. Your convertible doesn't have the dry sump, but the manual says to keep close watch on oil level for the first few thousand miles, mine's been good, I'm currently just over 1,200 miles. you'll get a good amount of brake dust, especially on the front wheels, try the Armor All product for wheels, it really works great. Good luck with the GS, I'm liking mine a lot.
You can get a head start by Googling the manual and reading it online, or actually printing it out (takes about a ream of paper) and you'll always have a large-print copy for quick reference at home.
For us it was a snap we took Museum Delivery and by day 2 we had 500 miles and I was able to let it rip after that and still running fine after 23k and two years
Be nice to it for 500 miles and then change the oil and filter somewhere around 1,000 and all will be good. All will be good even if you don't do this, but why not take care of the car?

Try to go longer than 500 miles........... We did a lot of "back roads" after our Museum delivery, so it was not a problem for us to do nearly 1K, before we did a lot of Interstate driving. Of course, it was 2K+ miles home, so the last day or two were exciting!
Go a step further than the owners manual instructions:
Take it easy for the first 1500-2000 and change the oil early.
Get a magnetic drain plug in there ASAP too.
You'd be surprised what comes out on that plug during break-in (and after).
The manual on our 2009 gives break in instructions that take you all the way to 1,500 miles.
The people who want to do it differently; are not the ones who made the engine & driveline, nor are they the people who stand behind it with warranty money.
