Does anybody know if we can retrofit the new OnStar features into our 2010 vehicles ? I am getting tired of OnStar sticking it to us by saying these new features will only work on 2011 cars.
I recently read an article in our local newspaper about GM's new OnStar technology. It stated that these new features will not be available for upgrade on existing OnStar systems, pre-2011 vehicles.
Viper makes a remote start and keyless entry system for $500. The anual fee is $30 a month. If you have a I-phone do a search for Viper in the App store.
I am not assosiated with Viper alarm company at all. My screen name comes from way back and was the name of the first server I built.

I'm not sure I understand, my OnStar ('09 Z51) does a lot more than any alarm or keyless entry system. Although I have not researched the Viper alarm, I can't see how it would communicate the status of my car to me or anyone else. The OnStar also serves as a vehicle locator in case of accident or theft, gives you emergency contact with police or paramedics, alerts the people who monitor it if you have an accident, allows you to open your doors if you lock your keys in the car, etc.
I don't know what the new features of the OnStar that the '11 model year cars have and I don't, but I definitely like to see what this new Viper alarm does....
Thanks, I went and looked around. I guess I live under a rock or something, I just cant keep up with everything
Anyway, the Viper thingy is not at all an OnStar replacement option. I don't care for remote starting since I have a 6s MT, the one thing I would really like is the Pandora access through the OnStar. Personally, I think that Twitter, Facebook and all other social networking should be banned to drivers of moving vehicles. People are already so distracted while driving that it's scary driving in the traffic.
It does suck that you cannot retrofit some of the useful features to the older OnStar versions though...
My referance was not to replace onstar but the 2011 onstar gives you remote start and lock unluck from your smart phone. this aftermarket device is semply a option for non 2011 owners to obtain the same fuction if you whant it.

Sorry, but it doesn't matter how many "features" that OnStar offers, it's not worth $200 per year to get a monthly e-mail report of information that I can get for free from the DIC. Satellite radio cost less, and I actually get value from that.
The only feature worth anything is the "Stolen Vehicle Assistance" but I've never had a car stolen amd "Replacement Vehicle" coverage is less than $100 per year. IMHO OnStar is "worth" only about $50 a year.
