Default Adding the ZR1 Spoiler

After a lot of thinking and wondering if I wanted to drill holes in my GS or let someone else do it, I decided to do it myself. Listed are the steps I took and I think it worked out very well. Lots of relief when the last nut was in place.

First I had to ponder over the butt with something to drink to get an idea of how to tackle the project.

Next I used a #20 Torx to remove the tail light lenses.

Reaching in through the lens opening I used a 10MM socket to remove the 4 nuts holding the brake light housing and uncliped the brake light plug. Then lifted the entire unit off the car. Taking pictures of the inside before removal gives you a good idea of whats there.

I laid the ZR1 spoiler in place prior to drilling holes to give me more time to think about it and get an idea of how it will look.

Next I masked off the area with masking tape where I would be marking and drilling the holes.

Marked the bottom of the bolts on the new spoiler with lipstick and placed the spoiler in its place, marking the masking taped areas for drilling.

Next comes the part that hurts the most. Drilling those holes. You know as they say. Measure twice and cut once. Well I measured more than twice and drilled 6 holes. I used a 19/64 bit.

Removed the masking tape and now have holes in the back.

Placed the spoiler in the holes and replaced the ten 10mm nuts on the ends of the bolts by reaching through the taillight lens again and tightening them down. Attached the brake light plug. Replaced the lens and the job was complete.

Nice write up, I am confused about the measuring thing though. If you mark the bottoms of the studs with lipstick or whatever there is no measuring at all, The 3 or 4 (can't remember) center holes are already there, there is no guess work, the studs fit into those holes enough to mark the outer holes with the lipstick etc. It is exact.

Looks great! Thx 4 the write up! I couldn't get the full width spoiler with ncm delivery. So I decided to install the zr1 my self when I get my GS. Did the spoiler come with double-sided tape? No templet provided? Come painted?
I've already started the thinking & drinking stage

Would it be worth putting some clear silicone around the holes to prevent any possible water from getting into the rear cavity? Just wondering. Nice pix and write up. Thanks for taking the time to share.

You don't need/want the tape, don't need the template, comes painted.
From start to finish the spoiler install took 25 minutes and that is because I dropped a nut and took ten minutes to find it.

I guess it couldn't hurt, but we have had our worst summer ever and it has rained a lot and my wife drives her car every day during spring, summer, fall. Water has never been in the truck of the car when she takes her gym bag out of the trunk everyday when she gets home.

4 center holes are there from the original spoiler as seen in the picture. when you place the zr1 spoiler in these holes it is aligned to the car. just make sure the ends of the spoiler are correctly placed.

Are there gaps between the spoiler and the rear deck on the window side of the spoiler (towards the front of the car)? I saw gaps on a previous post and that has me not wanting to do this. Love the look though, if only the window side of the spoiler fit slush.

That's a great write-up. Thanks for sharing.

How much does one of these spoilers cost and is it available in white?

the rear cavity is open at the bottom and is not sealed. it is located behind what would be the trunk. from the picture of the inside it appears water gets in there anyway. but i would guess you could try to seal it with silicone. would not be an easy job to be sure you have no leaks there.

Exactly, that is why I was confused when you said this..

i purchased an oem spoiler that was already painted. the bolts were on it and it did not come with the double sided tape. i did not use a template as you can see. You can do it. It really isnt that hard. The hard part is getting up the nerve to drill.

I too, put the ZR1 on my 2011 Grand Sport. This is one of the best looking mods you can make to your corvette. IMO
