Default Windshield

I took my 08 lt1 to the dealer for a scheduled windshield replacement. Like most dealers, they use a mobile vendor. They called me and said they couldn't to the R&R because the vendor's windshield was for no HUD or GPS and the one on mine was coded for GPS. They said my VIN stated GPS. Am I missing something here? As it is a Chev dealer, I would have thought the parts dept or sales could have had straightened this up.

Again, am I missing something here...............

I'd call the dealer and ask them some questions. There is a difference between a HUD and non-HUD windshield. I don't know about GPS.

I guess I'm missing something also. You don't have HUD do you? Why can't the non HUD windshield be used?

The GPS that they are referring to is Onstar. There are more than one windshield in use in the Corvette as there are four possible combinations of hardware options. The first would be with no HUD, no Onstar (referred to in the glass description as GPS). This is the basic 1LT windshield. The second will be with HUD, no Onstar. This will have a special reflective element laminated in-between the two layers of glass in the area of the HUD projector. The HUD glass is also .3mm thicker at the bottom and tapers up to the same thickness due to the reflective laminate. The third will be with no HUD and with Onstar. This will have a bracket affixed to the windshield for the Onstar antenna just behind the visor on the passenger side. The last will be with both HUD and Onstar (GPS). Depending upon which equipment you have on your car the windshield as installed at the factory will have a NAGS code on it and they are supposed to match the code when they install a replacement windshield.

Thank you for the excellent explanation. I do not have HUD but do have OnStar, even though I do not have the subscription.
Again Thanks.......

Today I took my 06 w/HUD and NAV to SafeLite a second time for replacement. The first time the new glass had an imperfection. Today, they had the wrong windshield with what appeared to be an Onstar attachment. They had ordered an AP Technology windshield with HUD and GPS. Apparently, as mentioned above, if you order GPS it is for Onstar, not Nav, so they had to reorder it with just HUD.

glad I saw this... I'm in the process of getting a windshield replaced and they asked the 'HUD or GPS' question and I said no to both since I have an '09 1lt w/o GPS or HUD. I do have the big block for onstar on my windshield though.

So do I need the 'GPS' version then?

Not sure if this is the standard for all glass companies, but I just got this info:

There are 2 windshields for the corvette in the glass company database from PPG.

HUD and non-HUD.

Yes. From what I saw today, and from talking to the SafeLite manager, you should order the GPS version if you want the block connection for Onstar. Ordering GPS (Onstar) doesn't have anything to do with having a Nav system.

Do you have or want Onstar? I'm wondering if you could just order a regular windshield without that big block if you don't use Onstar. I didn't like that big block for Onstar when I saw it on the windshield today.

Hope this helps.

Does the big block have to do with anything else besides Onstar such as the Sat. Radio?

No it does not. It is strictly the Onstar antenna. The satellite radio (XM) antennas are located in the side view mirror housings and the navigation antenna is located in the top center of the dash. Strictly Onstar as it relates to the windshield and the black rectangular box.

Once again, thank you. This is my first Vette and I have been unhappily surprised at how some dealers seem to know about the vehicle. The owners manual and forum are such great help.

You're welcome. I've learned a lot and gotten a lot of help over the years on this forum and it's nice to be able to give back once in awhile.
