So it's above/behind the battery? It's the cabin filter or the engine filter?
The one behind the battery is the cabin filter. It has 3 or 4 little metal loops that you pull, so you can swing the little door open. I actually used compressed air to blow out my filter, then I re-used it. No problems.

Flip the clips up, tilt the cover down, slide the filter out. Can be a little stubborn, especially going back in but some wiggling will get it installed. Lots of sources for replacements with wide price differences. Be aware there are some with carbon filtering and some without. The original did have the carbon.
DriverC6 thanks for the photo, it's very helpful. Do you recommend just using compressed air to clean as tomzarbo suggested?
Otherwise, do you know where I buy the carbon filter for cheap?
Thank you

I bought mine from Amazon. Though nearly all auto supply stores carry them.
I did a search on fleabay and found a new carbon one for under $20. Sorry, I cant remember the vendor. I have seen several comments here on CF that they are available for not a lot more than that at some parts stores - though may have to ordered due to low demand.
The compressed air trick should get out a lot of the bigger stuff. I replaced mine since my car is 5 years old so I thought it would have plenty of stuff embedded in the paper that wouldnt blow out.

If your car is a 2006 and the filter has never been looked at, then it will probably be really nasty looking. I did a thread on the carbon filter here:
BTW, if you have a replacement battery that's taller than the original, it might interfere with access the filter compartment.
Also, be sure to orient the filter with the airflow in the correct direction. IIRC, the airflow is top to bottom through the filter, so it needs to be installed with the airflow arrow pointing down.

I would certainly be happy to help you out with one as well. Just let me know if you need anything.
Gene,
I was wondering if my 2004 GMC Yukon has one (cabin filter) as well? I was noticing the other day a stale smell when a/c came on.....I've had it since new and it has 78k on it now.....if it does can you help me out with GMC parts? Thanks. Tim

Are you sure? I just took out the filter, it wasn't that dirty but I'll replace it anyway, and the arrow was clearly pointing up. This is how the car came from GM directly.

I think it is safe to assume the 2004 does not. If you would like to send me your VIN by email, or give me a call I'll double check. Also, I can certainly help you out with any GMC parts.

Yes, this makes sense. The factory AC Delco filter has an arrow that says "This side up"...most replacement filters have an arrow indicating airflow, which should point down. Just make sure you do whatever is correct for the filter that you have. The air flows down from the vent into the blower. The vanes of the blower can be seen when the filter is removed.

So the arrows point down if properly installed? It doesn't mean install this way up?
