Default Remember your first ride in a Vette?

I do. 1973, in an Orange 1973 4 speed with side pipes.

Swore I'd have a Vette one day. Worked hard and made it happen in 2002. Wish we had cell phone cameras back then to document life events.

I wonder if my 5 y/o will remember these rides (his first ones were in a pumpkin seat, he won't remember those!).

I wonder how many of us out there still remember their first Vette ride. I dare say a good %.

I will never forget it.

It was about 1960 or so. My family was from a place so far up in the Appalachian Mountains that we had to pump in sunlight. Not much nice up there. Just the way it was in the 1950s/60s.

A distant cousin showed up in a red '58 with white coves and the top down. It might as well been a spaceship from outer space aliens. I'm quite certain that my mouth was agape the entire time.

Three of my also tiny cousins and I piled into the passenger seat (we were all pre-school at the time, but imagine), with no seat belts, and he took off. I held onto the dash assist handle that was added to the Corvette interior in 1958.

He drove us around some windy mountain roads (what else was there up there?). I still remember the layout of the interior like it was yesterday. Totally blew my mind. Note that I had never been in a convertable or sports car before, and don't think that I had ever even SEEN a Corvette before then.

Yeah, it ruined me.

No, I don't. My first ride in a Vette was in the 67 Vette vert that I ordered and bought in the spring of 1967 when I was 25 years old.

It had a manual transmission, which I'd never had in a car before. So one of my uncles who had a car with a manual transmission let me learn to drive his while I was waiting for the Vette to be built and delivered.

I remember very well. It was in 2000 when i was in Connecticut. My uncle still has the 2000 C5 that i rode in. The car is completely stock and i though it was so awesome. I have a picture of me sitting in the car and I printed the picture out and typed "Soon!!" under it. I then took the picture and hung it up in my office. I told myself everyday that I was going to buy a C5 cash one day. Well, in 2001 I bought my current C5 Black on Black 6 speed with under 30k miles on it. I have a picture of me in my vette and I typed "Finally!" under it.

It wasn't long after that I started in the Corvette Challenge and met some of the best buds I could ever ask for.

In May of 1966 A buddy of mine in high school got a '64 Black fuelie convertible for his birthday. That was one of the best summers I ever had. When I got out of the Army my first stop was a used car dealer that specialized in Corvettes. I took one look at a Red '64 365 HP convertible and knew it had to be mine. 20+ Corvettes later I'm still wrapping my *** in fiberglass.

My first ride was on a test ride in a c6 about a month ago when I had already decided to purchase. I took delivery of one a couple days later. To this day, the c6 is the only Vette, I've ever driven or ridden in.

First one I put hands on was over 30 years ago.

1987, I was 13 and rode in the hatch area with my buddy and his mom was driving us to the pool. She drove slow so I remember thinking that Corvettes aren't as fast as they look. It was one of the shiniest black cars I had ever seen though. That was the only vette experience I had until I picked mine up at the auto shipping transport hub in Indy last year. Interesting first drive ever though, 39 degrees and raining for an hour drive home. Had to beat the snowstorm that was coming.

Gosh - not sure but I think it was in a buddy's 73 to test out a solid roller 540hp 383 that I ended up buying from him to drop into a 63 Impala. That motor put the Impy into the high 11s, so needless to say in a 73 vette with no roll-cage it was beyond stupidly fast....

Next one was probably the 91 I bought a few years later!!

I'm on my 3rd.

And to the OP, but my kids don't remember much from that early. They are teenagers now. But maybe - because 5 is about the earliest memories we can remember and so I guess it all depends on how significant it is to him. I had that Impy until the kids were way older than 5 and they don't even remember it at all.

it was about 1969, while i was senior in high school. My football coach (a young assistant coach who just got out of college) had a 1969 stingray. when my car broke down, he give a ride across town to my job after school. (it was on his way home). The vettes in these days rattled and squeaked a lot (doors and top), but it was still a vette and i told he him one day i am going to get one of these. it only took me 37 years later and one year in iraq to get it. and my 2006 covert does not squeak nor rattled.

lol.. was bored one day so me and a buddy went to a local dealer and test drove a new Z51 2LT I believe. After that I knew that it'd be my next car. I've driven and owned some fast/nice supras, Rx-7s, Evos, Cobras, Camaros, as well as a slew of Miscellaneous luxury cars but the vette is by far the best valued car I've ever been in. I still haven't really found anything that I would consider a better value sports car. The interior is damn near luxury quality as well.

But hey, I've got a C6 now and I don't think I'll be switching for anything unless I feel like getting a Z06 for some reason but I doubt it.. cruising with the targa top off is just too cool! : D

i've been hooked on corvettes since the late 50's. i was about 11 or 12, and my first corvette encounter was an AMT, plastic model, 59 corvette. i also remember going through my senior year of high school with a, rolled-up/folded up, 65 sales brochure in my back pocket.

my first ride was also my first drive. that was 1968. my then, future brother-in-law, had a 67 goodwood green, 427, aluminum head-L89, 4 speed, convertible - sidepipes and all (1 of 16 L89's). took it out for a half hour, or so, with my, future, soon to be, wife. it was 20 years later before i could afford my own corvette - a 1969 fathom green, 4 speed small block - sidepipes and all. the brother-in-law is gone now, and i've been tryin' for years to track down that 67 roadster. my 69 smallblock is also gone, and i've been through a half dozen, or so, corvettes over the years. 50 years later, and i'm still hooked on corvettes...

BTW, i've set a goal for myself - museum delivery of a new, C-whatever, on my 100th birthday! i hope we're both still around in 2047!!!

Oh yes!! The older brother of a friend of mine had just bought a new 69 blue vert which he gave me a ride. It sealed the deal for me. I had already fallen in love with the intro of the C3 1968 shark. The ride removed all doubt. It took me until the end of 1972 before I saved enough coin to buy a year old 72 warbonnet yellow L48 coupe which I kept for 34 years and put me on a life-long road of vetteing pleasure and Miles of Smiles.

I received a Dear John letter while I was in Vietnam. So when I came home in 68, this very honest young woman, gave me all of the money we were saving together and I bought my first Corvette, and, had my first Corvette ride/drive, a silver-blue/w white coves 1958. What a beauty. A couple of months later I would use a saber-saw to cut the louvers out of it's hood to bondo in a scoop.

Absolutely do. I ordered a 1977 T-top coupe with a manual transmission while deployed overseas and picked it up through dealership in Michigan when I got back home. I remember having my Dad go with me to drive it home since I hadn't driven a car (stick or auto) in nearly three years. An unforgettable ride home that day.

The first Corvette was red, as have been the two that I've owned since then. It was a fantastic ride then, and it's only gotten better.
