Default Winterize?

Hey!

I have a 2010 GS Coupe.. just picked it up now it has 189 miles on it.. might hit 300 miles or so before winter actually hits... any ideas on how to winterize a new car?

Do I need anything?

Fill the tires to 35 psi, full tank of gas, add stabil, add rodent protection if this is a concern when it's being stored, clean and cover the girl and tuck her in.

Do not forget to hook up a battery tender.

I am sure it doesn't hurt anything, but it would just bug me to death not to have it broken in yet and then sitting for 3-5 months. I would get those 500 miles on her first.

I agree with that! I'm trying to get the 500 miles but winter is approaching quickly! And according to the manual I can't really take it on a road trip to WI or something - Everyone is telling me not to sustain a certain speed for longer then 15 minutes!

Do I really need the tender even if the car is new?

Yes. You can take it on a road trip just don't use the cruise and don't drive at the same RPM's all the time.

Doh..... I knew I was forgetting to mention something. I just had to run out to the garage to be sure I plugged mine in. Turns out the vette was plugged in but not the wife's '66 Mustang. Thanks for the reminder.

A battery tender will deliver approx. 1.25 amps. Remember, it's not a battery charger. It's meant to keep your battery at it's peak level. You don't need to worry about the voltage, the Tender will adjust the charge level as the battery charge progresses. Once the battery is fully charged it will go into Float Mode, this prevents it from being overcharged.

There are plenty of good battery tenders. I've been using the Shumacher Tender for years and they work great. You can find it at most Wal*Marts.
Do a Search, you'll find a lot of suggestions.

Congrats on your GS Where are located in Chicago? Burbs or actually in the city?

I am keeping my car on the road as long as possible, normally I put it away week before Thanksgiving or that week so long as there is no salt on the roads yet You should be able to rack up another 500 miles in the next couple weeks. If you have trouble....I'll drive your car some for ya I have a 70 mile round trip commute to work each day

With regards to storage, as a few others have said:

Battery Tender (NOT Trickle charger)- A MUST
Top off fuel and add Stabil Fuel Stabilizer
Fill tires to 35-40PSI
Rodent protection (if that is a concern where you are storing) lots of different urban myths as to what works...I've used Dryer sheets and moth ***** and never had a problem

Car cover

That is about it. Also, lots of opinions on this, but once I store mine, I do not start it or drive it until I am ready to take it out of storage for the season.

I recommend the Deltran Battery Tender Plus, 12VDC - 1.25A output.

Batteries Plus sells them. I believe the NCM sells them as well.

You can also purchase a Deltran extension cable in a couple of different lengths if required to suit your needs.

Regards,

GSRANDY

Looks like everyone has you covered but to make it easy here's everything in list form. This list has been around the Forum for many years and while not everyone necessarily follows it exactly it is a good base to start from. Just pick and choose what you want to do with your car:

Fill gas tank and add Sta-Bil; run through fuel lines (15 - 20 minutes driving).

Change oil and filter. (at only 300 - 500 miles you really don't need to)

Park on moisture barrier (plastic, wood, just keep tires off bare concrete)

Inflate tires to 38 psi cold.

Apply sealant, wax, etc. to exterior paint.

Apply leather dressing to seat panel.

Apply vinyl dressing to interior; and to exterior black trim pieces.

Hook up Battery Tender.

Crack windows a bit.

Cover with inside car cover.

"Generally speaking", periodic starting during storage is not recommended because most people who do that "generally" don't allow the engine to get hot enough long enough to burn off built up condensation which then sits in the oil and internals and "can cause" problems. Not saying it can't be done correctly or done incorrectly and not have problems, just that most recommend not doing it.

If you dont start it ever 2 weeks, get a tender. I have never need one for any of my cars I have stored in the past. I just start it up every two weeks. Had no problems.
